For ’s contest.

This is Raghun, and I would bring him to life for a very special reason. No its not protection, or comfort, or because he's similar to me, but to put some of his four dimensional qualities to good use. With a bit a bribery I could get him to solve problems of life I have difficulty fixing myself, like getting car keys out of a locked car without breaking windows or anything, taking my bike lock off if I forget the combination, and knowing where objects are in any lit 3D space (basically he can find a needle in a haystack if there is enough light hitting the needle to be able to see it). I would have to give him something to occupy himself with though, or else he start entertaining himself by hiding things in the most improbable places (like my wallet in my neighbor’s dog’s stomach), or braking and linking chains together without braking the links, and other seemingly paradoxical activities.

In this picture, I've locked my keys in the car. At the moment I'm in the background waiting to see if Raghun will cooperate. He's thinking about giving me the keys, but he's not entirely convinced it's worth it, yet. I know, he sounds like a pain, but all of my characters have some downside to them. I guess with Raghun can help me in ways no one else currently around me possibly can.

One problem that would occur with bringing most of my other characters to life, would be their size and weight. For some, Earth's gravity is a bit too much for them, and others just couldn't get to certain places, like on upper levels, or in elevators (thinking particularly of the nearly 12,000 lbs of Zharcaor). Even though Raghun is quite large and heavy, just about all of it exists in 4D space. I guess if he does need to go into the upper level of a building, he can climb an object that happens to be parallel to 3D space, if there happens to be one near. If there isn't anything to climb, he can stand on the floor of the level breaking the floor, because he has several limbs that would distribute the weight.

(btw, the term 4D here denotes a direction for matter to extend that is not length, width, or height. 4D here is not referring to time.)

I’m proud of Raghun This is the first color picture I have ever done of him. I didn’t have his exact color nailed down before, but I always knew he was green. I got really detailed with him. Those little red and yellow lines in his hair are veins. The hair that looks like it’s coming off is actually still attached, it’s just that part of it is in a 4D direction. I would hate having to animate this guy, because his hair moves so much (it naturally falls in a 4D direction, and is pulled back to 3D when he moves) and his anatomy looks like it changes (hence the differences between the two right hands in the picture; they’re in 3D space at different points). If you take a good look at his visible eye here, you may notice you can see through it. That’s because the actual orbital part visible here is see-though. In this view, his head has three slits in it where light can enter. What’s happening is that your looking into his blind spot for that part of that eye. The red part is the back of the other ridge that separates the center opening and the left opening (you might get a better idea of what I’m talking about from this picture where the front of his head is visible, xovq.deviantart.com/art/Bren-a… . Th long thing that extends from his head to the foreground is a stalk eye (the eye is on the other side of the triangular thing). It is a simple eye that detects light intensities and movement. He has several of these eyes on his body.

Incredible, the detail/colors, everything is amazing. I love the story behind it too, instant fave

I've locked the keys in my car, and he's supposed to be getting them out for me (because he's 4d, he can get into spaces without openings).

wow, the amount of detail on Raghun is amazing. I love how wild and snarly the fur looks.

I sympathize with you on drawing cars. The fact that they're both very geometrical but also organic in shape usually trips me up. Some of your lineart on the car details are kinda shaky (like the overhead light). Also the interior color is a rather generic gray. I think making things like the seats and stuff on the dashboard slightly different colors would help.
Raghun has some nice shading but again, the inside of the car doesn't have much. For example, I would think the visor would cast a shadow on the roof of the car since the light seems to be coming in from the front windshield.
I'm a little confused as to why the tip of his tail is so brightly highlighted--is there a skylight in the car? If so, from this angle we should be able to see part of it.

Hope this helps!

Thank you it does.

I wasn't sure if putting more color in the car would distract from Raghun, but maybe just a dull blue blue color would work.

Well, technically the tip of his tail is not seen in the image, but I'm assumeing you're refering to the triangular thing in the foreground. That part is close to the window on the pasenger's side (that seat his hand is resting on is the passenger's seat). I guess if a picture was taken at this angle, the camera would be in the window.

Oh, gotcha! I somehow missed it was coming from his head so it couldn't be the tail. And yeah, the light from the passenger window makes sense XD

Man, my observational skills are a bit lacking tonight, maybe I should go to bed

This was funny reading your description, because the last few people I read said they wanted their characters brought to life for comfort and protection ect. XD

This picture is really unique. I was just looking at Raghun for like 5 minutes, such a cool design. I always lose my keys...
I'd get frustrated at my character if they didn't give me my keys DX

The detail in this is great, the picture as a whole is awesome. You really did a great job at drawing and writing about why you want him brought to life. The car, btw, does look great. I can't do cars D8

When I first read about your contest way back in November, I had a feeling that there were going to be several people that would bring a character to life for comfort and everything, so I tried thinking of a reason that would be different, and that no existing person is already doing for me.

Another thing I noticed about the other entries was that generally the character brought to life was similar in personality to the creator. Raghun is pretty much the oppisite of me. I don't like causing trouble and try to put others first. Raghun obviously enjoys playing tricks and causing problems for others. Most people probably couldn't stand him, but I can be patient.

That's true. A lot of people have made characters after their own image/personality. I agree with characters being different from you, it makes it more interesting ^^

Wow, to exist as a four dimentional creature in a three dimensional world or worse, on paper in only two dimensions, must be incredidbly boring unless given conceptual equations. ....Like my Calculus homework, anyone for "Applications of Differentiation to Limits of Infinity"

I don't know if I would give him something like that. There's a diffference between getting your math homework done, and getting your math homework done correctly.

Interesting idea. Power in a fourth dimension would indeed come in handy.

Xovq In reply to Kuruki [2008-01-21 22:31:51 +0000 UTC]

Thanks.

There is defiantly an advantage that beings from higher dimensions have over lower dimensional beings, so 3D beings have and advantage over 2D in a similar manner (though coming up with 2D anatomy is hard, because it needs to be much more concrete, because 3D beings would, theoretically, be able to see it. 4D anatomy can be a lot more abstract.)
