Description
4 The first was like a lion, and had eagleβs wings: I beheld till the wings thereof were plucked, and it was lifted up from the earth, and made stand upon the feet as a man, and a manβs heart was given to it.Daniel 7:4
Anyway, the lion represents Babylon. He's against the wall, because he's being made to stand. The water is there because the lion, along with the other four beasts, are described as coming out of the water. I think the heart's a bit self explanatory after reading the verse.
I started this piece my first year in AP art, but didn't finish it until my second year. The heart was done for the most part during the first year. When I came back to the piece in February, we did a lab in biology that involved dissecting sheep hearts (Valintine's Day too, btw). I tried to fix the heart on this picture by making the colors more similar, and making the fat more white and less yellow. I was afraid I'd mess it up though, so it didn't change too much.
The wing is coming in front of the face of the statue because I didn't want the face to draw too much attention to itself.
I was working on this piece right to the very last minute before it was photographed to be made into a slide. I'm still not pleased with it, but I just can't work on it any more.

In my opinion this painting is great, but the border distracts you from the main figure- which is of course the lion. Instead of making him blend in to the border, you could have placed the figured intot the painting, for example the heart in the middleground somewhere- So that it's still highly visible, but the audience isn't distracted from the lion. Great painting though!

Thanks for the critique, but this isn't a piece I really want to go back and fix, at least for a while.
