Description
I'm currently on holiday and have plenty of time for vectoring stuff like this, since it's all this ancient laptop is good for. Luckily DrawPlus X5 is pretty well optimised, enough to run faster than Chrome most of the time.Anyway, the Timberwolves from the latest MLP episode (Season 3, Episode 10) were kind of awesome so I traced one and added a background made from scratch. Well, almost; the moon is a vector from a Luna Tumblr somewhere. I'm quite pleased with this as a whole, except for the big blank space on that tree. Maybe I'll add some more detail later.

Everfree beasts such as the timberwolf aren't the only dangers out there...

The wolf itself is taken from a screenshot, but the rest is from scratch.

i really liked the outstanding 3d models in that episode. although they didnt have the highest framerate, it was a real nice change from all the flat 2d stuff

Yeah, although they were just on the brink of not fitting in with the usual style, I thought they looked really cool.

i just wonder how they made them blend in so perfectly with the non 3d environment.
and why they didnt animate them with more than... maybe 20 fps

Whoa I swear it looks like it's coming right out at me O.o Nice perspective/shading/whatever it is that makes this look three dimensional!

I didn't have to worry about perspective, I just traced over a screencap. And the shading was a default effect.

Lol well somehow it looks better than it did in the show XD
Maybe it's just when I see them moving that I find them awkward looking... They're so unnatural looking, don't fit in with the rest of the show at all I think

They probably busted the budget for the rest of the season on the CGI timberwolves. CGI is expensive, and animating it for even one frame puts a dent in production funds. That is why animated shows don't use it a lot.
On another note, I love this. A very fierce-looking timberwolf.

Couldn't have been that expensive for something so simple as a timber wolf... To me it basically just looks like a 3 dimensional model like something they would have in TF2 or something except there is no skin, it's just a skeleton and non of the individual pieces of the timberwolf actually change. Seems extremely simple to me
I don't know how normal CGI usually goes about but this thing couldn't have been that expensive... I've seen much shittier kids shows using 100% 3D models/animations although they might've used a different technique or something...
Can't really see this as being that ressource exhausting, why would it be?

That's what I thought. And maybe DHX already had CGI for use in other shows, but decided Timberwolves were too complex to animate well in 2D so brought it in to MLP. Or something. Anyway, it makes more sense than spending a lot on a technique used for one group of characters in one episode.

yup, I did not like the new timberwolfs. I hope they don't try something like that again.

what part didn't you like? the fact that it is not proven that they are Wood Golems?

I mean the 3D. That just did not fit.

I absolutely agree with you, I've seen some really good ones without any outline to make it look almost apart of the background. And in family appreciation episode i think in season 1, they have similar outline mechanics as normal ponies.

And they wrent 3D. That was the main problem I had with them, it's 3D in a 2D show made in flash! It's like rotoscoping Applejack over top of a real life wolf chase.

But anyways, good job on the scene. My rant against the outlining was against the episode, not this

The colors on the ones it the show where to off from what is normally used which caused them too look kind of bad, not to mention they looked like they weren't done rendering.

cormy1 In reply to Northwestcore [2013-01-03 23:10:21 +0000 UTC]
What makes them look like they weren't done rendering? Didn't know that was something that's even possible O.o What does a half rendered animation look like?!

Northwestcore In reply to cormy1 [2013-01-03 23:17:15 +0000 UTC]
Just watch it and you can see the color and animation on the timber wolfs just seems very off compared to anything else you'll see in the show.

cormy1 In reply to Northwestcore [2013-01-04 22:32:32 +0000 UTC]
Well yeah... Because they're a different type of animation style. But it's not because they weren't made properly
