I love this picture! It speaks to me much more than just a "fashion" shot. It's kind of creepy the way so many people on this site (not just with this picture, but with lots of them) jump to the conclusion that "omg there's a woman being degraded"...makes me wonder what they really think of women, that they see that so easily. To me, this /definately/ doesn't look like a woman being subdued, she's /breaking/ away from them, she's strong, she's fierce! *cheers*

at least, the "artist"of this could explain something about the picture. It is a really worked photo indeed, but the theme of it may not be that much good.

Also, I am very annoyed by all the Deviantart community... nowadays every time you go into the front page, you find women abused. If these kind of pieces are in the front page, it is because the people fav them, and donΒ΄t come to me saying that it is art and composition bla bla, women have a hard time try to be respetated and valued, you know.

I was just remarking on how degrading this piece is to women.

i see but it really isnt degrading its just art .. if there was a story that went with it like she was a sex slave or something then maybe but it really is a great piece of art ..... like gullivers travels they tied a dude down though

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

dolphin-filet In reply to velvetrose72689 [2008-04-09 23:14:21 +0000 UTC]

art can still be degrading, just like anything else.

And as I recall, Gulliver was not tied down for sexual reasons.

never said he was/ aid that would be degrading for the pic if there was a story to that extent for it ... dude i love gullivers travels
but yes art can be degrading but its a matter of how you feel and as a chick i dont find this degrading... though some might ... i still find it quite pretty and what is the artists take on it maybe he did mean for it to be degrading but i dont get that sense from it

Running away is never the answer ( unless the problem is a crocodile... they canΒ΄t run enough to catch us, lol ).

Trying to change the system from the inside is much more effective. Like little old me, for example. With my comment I started a meaningful discussion.

xvitruvianx In reply to CarmenMCS [2008-04-08 23:45:10 +0000 UTC]

I'm going to clear this up for you, since it seems to elude some people. This image is symbolic, the woman represents the feminine force, i.e. intuition, ART...the men represent the linear, masculine force, science, logic, etc. See how LARGE the woman is and how SMALL the men are? Guess who's side I'm on. It's a story for the ages ... reason tries to control what it cannot ... creativity.

Unfortunately, you can't see beyond the surface, a woman and ropes. Do you walk into a church (I assume you are Catholic) and haven't thought about complaining about all the violent images there, I mean, nailing someone to a piece of wood is pretty over the top. And I understand ... what are you 14 or 15 years old? Raised by a tv set and probably spend most of your time in front of a monitor ... And do you believe that quoting a video game is profound?

And I'm not just speaking to you, it's a major problem. No one really thinks, but then, in order to think, you have to experience things. And you have to be able to read ... it gives you access to great minds. Not the ones in video games.

I've taken down a lot of my work on here because there are far too many immature comments, and the system for screening adult content is pretty weak. This doesn't however devalue the system.

I suggest that before you go off on some other crusade, you might spend some time thinking about it a little more and if that doesn't work, you might try asking first.

I'm glad to know I'm not just a paranoid feminist. I see this kind of message in a lot of art and literature, and I immediately thought that you were trying to convey the idea of feminine suppression. I'm glad to know I wasn't just getting the message from a fashion shot. I was, honestly, quite confused with the comments above mine-- that's why I thought I may be reading too far into it. I appreciate the message, and I think you did a beautiful job of conveying it.

A well deserved DD.

Hmm yes, I see it now as you've writen it. I pretty much got it at first, cept for the comparison to creativity and logic.

I thought more of it as a men symboising the stuborn ways of todays society, trying to tie down whoever that tries to be different. Sort of killing the new and just going with the flow. But it also gave me the impression of todays trouble with equality between genders.

A realy good shot sir. Realy deep. And well, if others don't get it, then it's basicly since they're part of the ''men'' in this photo

I'm really glad you posted this, because I was reading all these comments and I was so confused because when I saw this, I figured if it had any deeper meaning besides amusement, it had to be symbolic of womens' struggle against a masculine society or some similar theme- it seemed obvious to me that the viewer is supposed to identify with the woman, not with the men. With all these comments that aren't even considering that there might be the slightest bit of symbolism in the photo, I thought I must be missing something. Thought I was going crazy, so I'm glad you cleared that up And wow. I'm sorry for you that your art is being so misinterpreted, because it's not like that meaning was incredibly obscure or hard to interpret.

Maybe if you actually kinda said something along these lines instead of a few dots as the artist's comments, people wouldn't see that way? The people here aren't really art critics. I admit I didn't really read too deep of a meaning from it, just thought it was some attempt at wit.
But now that I can actually see an artist comment about the peice, I'll say it's well done. :] An "Oh i see!" moment.

But still....an artist comment can make all the difference.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 2

xvitruvianx In reply to papuruikazuchi [2008-04-09 11:48:10 +0000 UTC]

Thanks for the comment, and I agree, a comment can make a difference. I'm used to approaching a piece of artwork with the assumption that there is a deeper meaning, and search for that within my experience. That, to me is the beauty of artwork, the interaction between one's experience and someone else's vision. To me, a successful piece will resonate with someone else's reality; it's as much the work itself as what someone else brings to it. So, the viewer's interpretation says as much about themselves as it does about the work. For this reason, I prefer not to have someone else tell me what I'm supposed to see or feel. Call it a need to explore my own subconscious, a self-revelation. Then, if I can draw nothing, and am still interested, I ask.

Conversely, I don't tell anyone else what to see, I only know what i intended. I prefer to leave it open-ended, let the viewer get involved, and then I get to learn something about them as well.

And, I'm always willing to answer questions.

Well...:] I can see what you're getting at. Sometimes when someone tells me how something seems to convey some feeling, i feel quite opposite. I just usually enjoy being able to see what the artist was thinking/feeling at the time of making it so I can see what it may really mean while also still seeing what i see!
