So according to some people, when someone- makes fun of your beliefs
or
- tries to harass you about your beliefs
or
- challenges you to think about something related to your beliefs
the second you try to give reasons supporting your beliefs against their argument (or even simply asking them to respect other beliefs apart from theirs), you will be labeled as "close-minded" and "defensive".
Where is my hope in humanity now?

you're being closedminded/narrowminded or whatever, if you refuse to listen simply because you don't Want to be wrong. if you have nothing to say against it and just stubbornly keep quiet or saying the other person is stupid for not agreeing with your beliefs - then yeah you kinda are.

It's encouraging you to "give reasons supporting your beliefs against their argument (or even simply asking them to respect other beliefs apart from theirs)," and I dont see how that is not cowardly or close-minded.
