Edit 7/11/11:STRING DOLL BASE for those of you who do not know how to get the pattern even. [link]

Edit 2/18/11: STEP 4: CLARIFICATION 2.0 [for those who still don't get it][link]

---
Ever wanted a string doll but thought they were too expensive???

I did...

The one I actually bought was like $10 dollars....and me being stubborn and hating spending that much because I don't get much allowance decided that I'd make my own, and hey I found an instruction page.

....and it's not very clear, a bit confusing--> [link]

Well actually I was okay...except on step 4...IT KEPT COMING LOOSE!

Edit: As a brilliant alternative to pins you can use toothpicks! Idea courtesy of

So I did it, I created this tutorial out of sheer boredom, because I haven't made one in awhile, and decided to. That and....I haven't seen very well explained instructions on how to make these guys on the the internet.

If you people don't know what string dolls are...THEY'RE MAGICAL No seriously, supposedly they are, each one of them has a magic power...or at least that's that it says here: [link]

The site listed above can be used to look at so that you can try and make your own version of their products, if you wish to buy from the site, it's fine by me

Anyways, I've made four of these guys so far, and none of them look perfect, the first one looked like a deformed caveman. keep practicing and the better it will get.

Just so you can see ones that I actually bought that were hand-made in Thailand: (hence the title of the tut) [link]

If you have any questions please ask! I'm here to help.

(Also if the head strings seems loose, just dab some glue on the strings to hold them in place )

----
Edit: Also if anyone makes these or uses my tutorial please post a link, I want to see.

Dude i just started making it. i kinda tweaked the supplies, istead of card board i used sturdy styrafom, and instead of stable pins i used paper clips. guess you gotta use what you got. :jolly:

xXSleepieXx In reply to MassMediaTrainWreck0 [2011-04-07 23:49:10 +0000 UTC]

Lol yea,
Don't use pushpins though. I made one last friday using some cause I didn't have pins at my art class (my teacher wanted to see how I made one.)

--and I can't even begin to tell you how long it took me to get the knot out of the center pin....

But I made it though lolz...

You should be fine with what you got....I think. Lemme know if there's any problems.

hey! thanx alot i just made one and i think it looks okay... but the head was too big nd wasnt even a circle yet! how did u make ur head!! its a perfect circle!!!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

xXSleepieXx In reply to yazminova [2011-02-14 23:38:08 +0000 UTC]

Wind it around and make a "neck" area when you're making the head, also wind it randomly...like everywhere, not in one direction for a long time.

If my heads still don't look too circle-ish I go back and tightly wind the neck area.

Remember if your head doesn't come out sphere-ish you can unwind and start over before it gets too big. It takes alot of practice.

I actually just finished it! Your tutorial was a LOT of help. Do you have any tips for getting the head to be more round? Mine isn't as round as I'd like it to be but its round enough haha

If you want to take a look at it, here is the link Deadpool String Doll

xXSleepieXx In reply to BreeChatter [2011-02-13 06:25:44 +0000 UTC]

Wow...I really love the design I love comic book heroes myself This is awesome. I hope he likes it

A tip for the head make sure you wind the string around a bit (tightly) to make a "neck" area Then you can move on to make the head and wind it randomly. If it starts looking less sphere-ish, wind the neck part again. You can always unwind and go back if you don't like the head. (make sure to dab some glue on top so it doesn't start unwinding when your done )

Thank you very much for this useful guide! I've been looking for something like that for ages.
One little question i'm sure a lot of people asked... How do you go for adding hair to the doll? just take some wire, cut it and glue to the head, or is there a more precise method?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

xXSleepieXx In reply to TowerCorp [2011-02-04 23:56:44 +0000 UTC]

You welcome

well it wouldn't be wire....you would use some yarn instead.

Kinda like adding hair to a normal doll. That's one of the things I need to find out myself

When I was trying to put hair on my guys we cut strips of yarn and knotted them in the middle then glued it on...then we got a guy that looks like he has dreads.... [link]

Try experimenting...I still need to figure out how to exactly do it. It's been awhile since I've played around with these guys.

xXSleepieXx In reply to sunny-hedgehog65 [2011-01-30 08:32:17 +0000 UTC]

depends on where you get them.

the slot machine ones I got were $1...but they're gone now

The fancy ones at the mall/internet cost alot more.

If you buy them in the stores (Fuego is our popular vendor here) they're anywhere between 7-10$ but the vendor ones are only $1.00, IF you can find a machine!

if you look up on youtube there should be a video similiar to how I make mine.

[link] This should help?

....I wish I could make a video but I don't have a camera for that....

Just keep trying, it was a bit difficult for people, don't expect to get one on your first try. I had to try 4 times just to string the string around the pins and secure it right.
