Description Edit 7/26/12: AT LONG LAST A VIDEO!: [link]

Edit 7/11/11:STRING DOLL BASE for those of you who do not know how to get the pattern even. [link]

Edit 2/18/11: STEP 4: CLARIFICATION 2.0 [for those who still don't get it][link]

---
Ever wanted a string doll but thought they were too expensive???

I did...

The one I actually bought was like $10 dollars....and me being stubborn and hating spending that much because I don't get much allowance decided that I'd make my own, and hey I found an instruction page.

....and it's not very clear, a bit confusing--> [link]

Well actually I was okay...except on step 4...IT KEPT COMING LOOSE!

Edit: As a brilliant alternative to pins you can use toothpicks! Idea courtesy of

So I did it, I created this tutorial out of sheer boredom, because I haven't made one in awhile, and decided to. That and....I haven't seen very well explained instructions on how to make these guys on the the internet.

If you people don't know what string dolls are...THEY'RE MAGICAL No seriously, supposedly they are, each one of them has a magic power...or at least that's that it says here: [link]

The site listed above can be used to look at so that you can try and make your own version of their products, if you wish to buy from the site, it's fine by me

Anyways, I've made four of these guys so far, and none of them look perfect, the first one looked like a deformed caveman. keep practicing and the better it will get.

Just so you can see ones that I actually bought that were hand-made in Thailand: (hence the title of the tut) [link]

If you have any questions please ask! I'm here to help.

(Also if the head strings seems loose, just dab some glue on the strings to hold them in place )

----
Edit: Also if anyone makes these or uses my tutorial please post a link, I want to see.

Why can't I do this?! I can't get the double knot part right!! I don't get it!!! *sigh* Good tutorial, though, I guess.

Lyklex [2014-06-04 02:45:07 +0000 UTC]

Suggestion, use a small pine cleaner to wrap around the body if knots aren't too secure. Also adds body to put more string in the head! I use two friendship bracelet skeins (17.5) yards per doll. They look better with pine cleaner in the base.Β

Um... Suggestion? I've looked at my dolls, and it looks as if the bead eyes are ON the string. Maybe, before you start a doll, slip two beads on the string and slide them all the way to the ball of yarn. Keep sliding them up when you unwind more yarn, and stop sliding them up when you make the head. The bead eyes will be "sewn" onto the doll. You just have to make sure the beads are where you want them when you make the head.

The eyes will be less likely to fall off. I'm making my doll waterproof by using clear nail polish, but even with nail polish the eyes will fall off my dolls.

I just went to the Pinball Hall of Fame today, and you know those machines where you put in quarters and get candy or a small toy? 50 cents for a string doll. I'm pretty sure they're knockoffs, but they're as good as the originals. I just lost one, but it was 50 cents! Now I'm making my own with dark teal and neon pink yarn (I have a lot around the house. I'm a knitter.) YAY!!

"O" shaped black beads but I turned them sideways so that they don't show the hole in the middle.

not rally sure how to make hair yet. There are other string doll artists that do know how to make them, do look around deviantart, I've seen some tutorials regarding how to do hair. >.< I will eventually try and figure out how to do it myself, until then I'm not really sure.

I'm curious how to go about making a large one, I tried making a larger star shape but the body part got wonky :0

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

xXSleepieXx In reply to CCsbohemCo [2012-12-26 22:02:36 +0000 UTC]

I think with a larger star shape you add more loops for the arms/legs.

So like instead of 3 you would make 6 loops...maybe that would work?

Sorry for the late reply ^^ I had school
