Edit 7/11/11:STRING DOLL BASE for those of you who do not know how to get the pattern even. [link]

Edit 2/18/11: STEP 4: CLARIFICATION 2.0 [for those who still don't get it][link]

---
Ever wanted a string doll but thought they were too expensive???

I did...

The one I actually bought was like $10 dollars....and me being stubborn and hating spending that much because I don't get much allowance decided that I'd make my own, and hey I found an instruction page.

....and it's not very clear, a bit confusing--> [link]

Well actually I was okay...except on step 4...IT KEPT COMING LOOSE!

Edit: As a brilliant alternative to pins you can use toothpicks! Idea courtesy of

So I did it, I created this tutorial out of sheer boredom, because I haven't made one in awhile, and decided to. That and....I haven't seen very well explained instructions on how to make these guys on the the internet.

If you people don't know what string dolls are...THEY'RE MAGICAL No seriously, supposedly they are, each one of them has a magic power...or at least that's that it says here: [link]

The site listed above can be used to look at so that you can try and make your own version of their products, if you wish to buy from the site, it's fine by me

Anyways, I've made four of these guys so far, and none of them look perfect, the first one looked like a deformed caveman. keep practicing and the better it will get.

Just so you can see ones that I actually bought that were hand-made in Thailand: (hence the title of the tut) [link]

If you have any questions please ask! I'm here to help.

(Also if the head strings seems loose, just dab some glue on the strings to hold them in place )

----
Edit: Also if anyone makes these or uses my tutorial please post a link, I want to see.

Thanks for posting this! I don't know if I commented already but, I just made my fourth one. It's orange. c: I use strictly glue and 2x friendship string at 8 meters long. Not sure exactly which, but I think my blue one has a little pip-cleaner on the inside of the head. I actually use a big needle to sew in the knots. I've bought 3 from Hot Topic.

I can't remember if you commented already

But you are very welcome!

Pipecleaners are good for having a base for the head to get nice and round

Yay

I-I had to do it over twice, and on the second time, I was like, "F*** this", so I cut off all of the appendages except for the neck, because that was the only one I had wrapped like lllll, and I was lazy and only did 5 knots, so everything was ooogley. So, working from the neck, I made a head, and glued two blue eyes on it~
I made it into a key chain, and it's an adorable little ghost~

xXSleepieXx In reply to PinballWizard2112 [2011-09-10 23:15:51 +0000 UTC]

I usually find them in malls.

So I guess that's why they hike up the price so much. I really need to keep an eye out for them.

No problem.

Wow, this is very helpful!
After I bought one, I was so envious about having another like a lot of other people have.
Now that I know how to make one, I can design it to my liking, thank you!
I'll be sure to link back a photo in the future.

You are very welcome.

Now other people will be envious that you can make them....

It's a great way to make money, a lot of people tell me they sell them in school fairs.

I didn't have any beads for the eyes so what I did was I took and old white eraser from a mechanical pencil and cut off two teeny pieces then colored them black. Just another idea for the eyes I thought everyone might like.
