Description Edit 7/26/12: AT LONG LAST A VIDEO!: [link]

Edit 7/11/11:STRING DOLL BASE for those of you who do not know how to get the pattern even. [link]

Edit 2/18/11: STEP 4: CLARIFICATION 2.0 [for those who still don't get it][link]

---
Ever wanted a string doll but thought they were too expensive???

I did...

The one I actually bought was like $10 dollars....and me being stubborn and hating spending that much because I don't get much allowance decided that I'd make my own, and hey I found an instruction page.

....and it's not very clear, a bit confusing--> [link]

Well actually I was okay...except on step 4...IT KEPT COMING LOOSE!

Edit: As a brilliant alternative to pins you can use toothpicks! Idea courtesy of

So I did it, I created this tutorial out of sheer boredom, because I haven't made one in awhile, and decided to. That and....I haven't seen very well explained instructions on how to make these guys on the the internet.

If you people don't know what string dolls are...THEY'RE MAGICAL No seriously, supposedly they are, each one of them has a magic power...or at least that's that it says here: [link]

The site listed above can be used to look at so that you can try and make your own version of their products, if you wish to buy from the site, it's fine by me

Anyways, I've made four of these guys so far, and none of them look perfect, the first one looked like a deformed caveman. keep practicing and the better it will get.

Just so you can see ones that I actually bought that were hand-made in Thailand: (hence the title of the tut) [link]

If you have any questions please ask! I'm here to help.

(Also if the head strings seems loose, just dab some glue on the strings to hold them in place )

----
Edit: Also if anyone makes these or uses my tutorial please post a link, I want to see.

it looks so cute,i made stuff easy for my mom and said i'm just gonna draw the eyes on with a sharpie and i'm not cutting the string all the way off so i can put it on a necklace (all that's ok right? >.<)

oooh wow necklace

What I think would be more stable is trying a string through the top of its head or around its neck to put it into a necklace. I think that should be okay just make sure its very stable so you don't lose it.

I think this will come in very handy cos I wanna make these to use as part of a goody bag for each of my cosplay group members at an anime convention we're attending. I think it makes a great gift for friends and such. I wanna try making some in the future also to maybe one day sell

Go ahead and do whatever you want, I just want people to have fun ^u^!

What a great idea! If you are going to put these as goody bags you could put them on keyrings or cellphone straps? (if you don't that's okay too, whatever you wanna do! ) ^^

Anime Conventions are the best

Two questions:

1. Is it possible to use hot glue instead of regular glue in a bottle?
2. What's the best material to make clothes/accessories out of?

I've seen plain old yarn for hair, felt for clothes, and even more crochet yarn for other things. All I need is hair, but these are super cute, so tips for future reference would be nice.
Thank you!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

xXSleepieXx In reply to miramira-tan [2011-11-19 01:08:49 +0000 UTC]

o, I think hot glue would make it too stiff, and you might get burned, anything watery like elmer's glue should do the trick, relatively cheap too.

The best material for clothes is any scrap fabric or felt from what I've seen, you can use wire for making glasses/canes, props.

The website I provided to buy stringdolls have many examples of clothes for inspiration.

You are very welcome
