Chretien is very much a sweetheart. He's very old-fashioned gentlemanly, treating ladies with the highest respect - though he tends to shrink around the pretty ones. He's thoughtful and will always be thinking of others. He tries not to touch sensitive subjects that may offend others, and tries his best to avoid conflict and fights. Others might see this trait as being feminine, but he is anything but feminine. If you call him a girl he will bite your tail off. Just because a guy is kind doesn't make him girly, and Chet wants to prove that.

Light streamed through the cage bars, casting long, straight shadows across the tiny body of the lynx cub.

“How much for her pelt?”

“Her cubs won’t go for much.”

“This one – he can go first in the ring.”

Words that had been said the previous days echoed through his mind, accompanied by clashes of metal and the cold screeches of cats. What seemed like normal now, the cub would wake up on a cold stone floor, four walls surrounding him, get geared up, and sent out to battle. It had been this way since he could walk. He didn’t know any different – his young mind figured that every cat had to go through this; an empty life. Wake up, survive, go to sleep. No way out. No one tried. He hadn’t seen anyone able to escape – frankly, he hadn’t spoken to anyone before. Their lives belonged to the humans. His life had been fast-paced since the moment it began. His family life didn’t last long. Not long after his eyes opened he was separated from his mother completely, and could only gaze upon his three sisters on the other side of the dark room, with a few larger cats between them. One was a snow leopard. The cub would watch him leave and come back with blood all over him – but it would tend to be his opponent’s blood. He terrified the tiny lynx, thinking that he’d have to fight against him one day like the others did and never came back. There was a small, red jaguar on the cage next to him as well. She was about the same age as him too. AloÏsia was her name. Everyone knew her. She tried to talk to him once, but he didn’t reply. It seemed kind of like a tradition not to talk. He just copied what the older cats did.

“Chretien, ‘anointed.’ He will lead us to a new home.”

“Faiza, ‘victorious.’ She will stay strong until it is time.”

“Salome. She will keep the peace between the four.”

“Tyshikus. Stay faithful. Do not let them be led astray.”

Those were the only words he could recall from his mother. His colosseum name was Vachel, which he hated. One, it sounded girly, and, two, it meant ‘small cow.’ He still considered himself Chretien. And he couldn’t bear to think that he was short. Or a cow.

Six moons passed. Salome, Tyshikus, Faiza, and Chretien were still alive after all the battles they had been through. Their bond grew stronger as the days went on. Chretien – or Chet – still felt the responsibility to lead his family to a safer home. He had watched AloÏsia get practically killed – and that was the closest he had seen to escaping. The humans abandoned her outside the city after amputating her leg, where she would surely bleed to death. It cut Chretien to the bone. His bond with the jaguar had grown strong and then in such a short time she was taken from him. He vowed to kill the feline that did this to her, but he was not able to commit this.

The hinge was left unlocked. His cage was open! As the moon crept into the sky, so did Chet out of his cage. He squeezed around and between the larger cages and found his sisters. He had been watching how the humans locked and unlocked the cages and he easily lifted the hinge to free Faiza – then Salome, and then Tyshikus.

“Chet,” Faiza hissed in a sharp whisper, “Hurry up, we have to go!”
The male ignored her. He wasn’t about to leave without all the family members. “Keep going, I’ll catch up.” The lynx sprang up on to the window then landed lightly on the other side. His breath fogged in the cold night air as he skirted the colosseum walls almost as silently as the shadow that followed him. He felt his duty was to save not only his sisters but his mother too. He wasn’t sure of her whereabouts, or if she had been purchased for her pelt, but he believed that the noble thing to do was to at least search for her.

Pausing at every wall as if there were enemies lurking behind every corner, Chretien continued his search for a few hours, which felt like days. He sat down heavily when he was sure he had looked in every cage. It was a strange feeling. He had figured this would be the outcome, but he still felt distraught. He had clung to the tiny string of hope of that she was alive for as long as he could remember, but now he felt lost.

Faiza’s probably ran them into trouble again. I better find them. After all, it was his job to find them a new home.
