Description inspired by ~Jason-C n ~ShippD ; and with their critiques, this a 1hr render. i actually rendered this a few times because i wasn't satisfied with the colors. but as usual, i'm kind of tired of renderin it and changin things around . and for anyone interested; the .c4d scene, .psd, and original topmod object is available; just let me know. 1920x1200 objects made in topmod, setup in c4d, rendered w/ advanced render 3. critiques and comments welcome

thanks so much and awesome work!!! how long was render time for such a large piece? and also, how long have you been working with c4d?

Oh, and thanks for the Topmod tip too!
I already made some very cool objects.
The only thing that bothers me is that its crashing relatively often.

xxtjxx In reply to cresk [2010-10-02 00:33:44 +0000 UTC]

yeah man, crashing got to me initially too. but of course after a while you learn what you can and can't do to make it crash. 15 min render time, excellent! judging by the settings you adjusted, seems like you've had a lot of experience with 3D. so tell me this, is max harder to learn than c4d? I've been flirting with the idea of switching to 3ds max, but i've learned so much in c4d, it's hard switching, yanno? particularly for interiors, I believe 3ds n vray to better than c4d n vray. and you're more than welcome to the Equable scene as well if you'd like. also, here are some other free scenes [link] . and at any rate, thanks a lot for commenting man! it isn't often that someone downloads one of my scenes.

cresk In reply to xxtjxx [2010-10-02 00:56:07 +0000 UTC]

You're absolutely right. 3ds & vray are very hard to beat when it comes to interior scenes in particular. I haven't seen better interiors done in other programs just yet.

Though the learning curve of max is nothing compared to c4d. I've been reading 3ds books for years, but there's still tons of things to learn. I think you have to use 3ds almost on a daily base to become ace at it. On the other hand I think c4d is more suitable for designers and artists, while 3ds max is still king for gaming artist and those who demand the highest of quality for their interior scenes. Also, I'm seeing really dope abstract artistry from c4d users lately. I think it's this quick approach in c4d which makes this artwork possible for many novice 3d artists.

But speaking of interiors and renderers, there's another renderer which is very good and it has been around for a couple of years now. It's from Maxwell [link] Some believe this is the best renderer you can get because it's entirely written based on real physics! I've seen really stunning renders from Maxwell lately.

Yeah, although I was playing with HDR setups and making softboxes to lighten my scenes, your scene became very useful for me to quickly realize that idea I had in mind for some time. It's always good to see guys like you who are willing to share some of their little secrets.

And your new Equable scene is fantastic mate. What kind of material did you make to get this level of transparency. Really love it for sure..

thanks man! and finally there's someone who agrees with me that there is a difference. i know one guy who thinks c4d & vray produces the same quality. and yes, i thought 3ds had a higher learning curve. thanks for confirming. also, I agree with the influx of c4d abstracts. though I'm currently inactive on here it's nice to see all of the new c4d users. and as far render engines go. i've tried dozens. thea render, luxrender, maxwell, and fryrender, arion render. i have tried maxwell and it's rival (fryrender) and I must admit I prefer fryrender. it's faster than maxwell. and as you say, it's unbiased and produces renders based on realistic lighting n calculations from the algorithms. as far as realism goes, maxwell and fry are as good as it gets. [link] here are some of my fryrender renders. and thank you! it's a standard glass mat I think. made it so long ago. if you'd like I can send it to you

cresk In reply to xxtjxx [2010-10-02 02:00:07 +0000 UTC]

Great, didn't know about fryrender. Will try it out as soon as I can get my hands on it. Do you think it will make a lot of difference compared to the standard c4d renderer in terms of quality for this 3d abstract type of work? Your fryrender gallery looks great though. However, I can't see much significant differences compared to your latest renders. Or are you using vray now?

Thanks for the info anyway. I am by no means an expert on renderers. I used to digg Brazil for 3ds a lot a couple of years ago.

I think I can handle the glass material when I need it. It's good to know someone who has more experience in c4d. Maybe I do have some question in the near future [link]

Wow! What tutorials did you use to get started on c4d? im really curious bud

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

xxtjxx In reply to TomRumble [2010-07-02 12:08:46 +0000 UTC]

thanks man! there are a few dozen tutorials that I tried but to no avail. c4d didn't click for me until I gave up on it 2 times. after months I came back to it and someone referred me to the 3D Fluff tutorials. (a google of "3d fluff dvds" will reveal all). i can firmly say that after watching those dvds religiously for some days…c4d clicked and I rapidly improved and understood c4d, rendering, lighting, and everything else that I wanted to know. my biggest thing with c4d is the lack of tutorials though. so I pretty much make a tutorial for anyone who requests, and if I don't have the time or for whatever reason I can't, I give them the .c4d scene files and every other resource I used. much luck mate!

Thank you so much for replying bud, its so hard to get some proper help on these subjects around the net and i will look at those tutorials you suggested. I've always been a photoshop buff so im pretty solid on everything 2D, i just can't seem to break into this 3D thing and i really want to. I have C4D 11.5 and im doing my best, have you tried 3ds max? < that has to be the most confusing program ive used anyway, your help is much appreciated mate and ill be sure show you any successes i might have now hahah. And yeah as i said, photoshop is easy to me so if you have any Q's about it then feel free to ask. Cheers.

thanks man! photoshop was the first program I learned for some years until I realized that I was trying to do 3D art like this with photoshop. ignorance I tellya. at any rate, please do update me on your progress. i'll have to watch you. and when I was deciding on which program to choose, I chose cinema 4d because the lack of tutorials and what not. a few months ago I needed 3ds max to convert some things for c4d and I dloaded it..eh. the interface is confusing to me, the program itself is confusing. but the few tutorials i've seen for it..the functions and tools are very similar to c4d. so you can pretty much use most tutorials for 3ds for c4d, but as you say, I find the interface and what not confusing and ..not.. 'me', per sé
