Description
This is my entry for =silverglass19 ’s new Adoptables contest. She drew six yearling horses, and the challenge was to draw one as an adult, give it a gender/name/story/etc, and submit it. I chose to draw horse #2, and she gave me permission to draw him as a Bacabello instead of as a regular horse.

Atzlpalli was born in Mexico in 1523, just after the fall of the Aztec Triple Alliance.

His sire, Cuicatl ( [link] ), was a Bacabello warhorse in the Spanish army under Cortés, but escaped when his rider was killed in battle. However, Cuicatl snuck back and attempted to convince several other horses to run away with him. Only one horse decided to join him: Cimera.

Cimero BL ( [link] ), was a Spanish Arabian mare bred and trained in Spain as a racehorse and shipped to Mexico as a four-year-old. She loved running, and she resented being tied up and made to stand still for hours when the humans weren’t exercsing her. So when Cuicatl came to offer her freedom, she accepted wholeheartedly and left with him. Cuicatl’s ability to talk to other animals allowed them to avoid major danger and to find food and water. They came to rely on each other and stayed together for many years to come, although Cuicatl naturally aged slowly and would live for many years after his mate had passed on.

Two years after their great escape, Atzlpalli was born. Because of his cobalt wing-shaped markings, they gave him a name meaning “winged” in Nahuatl, the language of the Aztecs. Both parents expected his ability to be flight, but as the months went by, he showed absolutely no promise of flying.

Instead, he simply ran.

Atzlpalli’s true ability was the gift of speed — no doubt passed on by his mother. By the time he was a yearling he could not only outrun both his parents, he could keep up with the birds of the sky and the wind in the air. His mental abilities and reactions were also supernaturally swift, so fast that Cuicatl began to teach him how to communicate with several other animal species. Atzlpalli's curiosity and natural love for adventure and knowledge led him to explore the jungles around them, talking to every animal he could, and occasionally these mini adventures ended badly. Once as a two-year-old, he startled a snake into lunging at him. He reared up and fell over backwards in sheer surprise. Although the snake missed him, the fall gave him three scars near his tail that he bore for years.

When the time came, Atzlpalli left his parents to wander the jungles and plains of Mexico alone, with only passing birds and the wind for company. His father gave him one of his own bell bracelets, while his mother gave him a blue-green feather from a queztal bird.

And off he went.

Markings: Cobalt (Common)
Tattoos: Signed on the left side of his face under his eye
Ability: Speed in all things, both physical and mental (including things like reaction time, learning, and metabolism)
Eyes: Right eye is emerald green, left eye is ice blue
Height: 15.3 h
Jewelry: Wears bright feathers in his mane, beads/stones/gems/etc in his tail, and tiny golden bells on his left hind leg (parting gift from his father)
Other: Although it is not one of his natural abilities, his father taught him to speak to birds, zorros (little foxes), and monkeys.
