I LOVE your tut!! This is probably the most successful one I've tried! I'll see if I can post what I've done later

Thanks for the link — it's looking pretty good! I have a much newer, updated tutorial too; the link is in the artists comments if you are at all interested. I think it produces much better results.

I tried that... but no avail... do you think you could post a video how to draw in your other style?

Hmm, I've never tried recording a video of my painting process. I don't really know how that would work. It's an interesting idea, I'll think about it.

this is the most helpful tutorial I've ever used. Even if it's not your most up-to-date style, I have found that this works very well for me.

Thank you — it's rather out of date compared to the way I paint now, but I'm glad it's helpful.

how would you get rid of the sharp edges of the horse's body where the lineart should be? like ummmm.. in the last screnshot with the tail, how would you smooth the harsh edge of the leg to give a softer look? xD
btw, this was really helpful

There are a couple ways to do it - you could go over the edges with a soft brush, or you could use a soft eraser set to less than full opacity (maybe 40% or so).
Actually, since I made this tutorial, I've stopped painting this way, and I now tend to use much harder brushes, but I'm glad you found this helpful.

For dapple greys, there are some nice time saving tricks you can use.
- First off it helps to keep in mind where grey horses are lightest, versus where they stay dark. Their lower legs (esp the hind legs) and rump tend to stay dark longer than the rest of them, whereas the head and throatlatch tend to turn white quickly.
- A really helpful trick that makes the dapples look more realistic is to make sure the base tones (before you do the dapples) isn't solid. It should be a little messy looking. Here's an example: [link] Usually I'm too lazy to actually do that, but it comes out looking muuuch better than putting the dapples down on a solid base. I don't know if I'm explaining this well, but you can basically add random-ish streaks and patches of lighter or darker grey to make the patterning more complex.
- Usually the mane and tail are either darker, or lighter than the body, NOT the same colour. It's not uncommon for the mane to be darker while the tail is nearly white, like this: [link]
- Dapples usually aren't quite round, and they tend to look a little geomentrical or to fit together a little. I can't explain this particularly well, but if you look up some photos of proper dapple greys, you'll see what I mean.

This helps so much, thank you for putting this tuto up! I have Photoshop CS4 and I have been strugling with mane and tail (and a good deal of the body) for as long as I can remember. Will the Fade option on the Shape Dynamics work for the natural look?

Yes, it will work, although I haven't used it as much and don't know a whole lot about it. I'm glad the tutorial was helpful, though. If you use it, I'd love to see what the final product.

Hey, thanks for these. I've been really struggling with my shading, and trying to figure out my manes and tails. It's always nice to see something new to try.
