Description This took me for-freaking ever, least of all the month I spent pondering what I actually wanted to do with the idea I'd had behind the picture- for some reason I just can't bring myself to upload every half-assed scribble I do, and when I do make something I try to make it different from what I've done before. The big disappointment I had was that his face is barely visible.... I want to give drawing Fred's lovely face another shot, if my girlish hormones can stand the challenge.

I'm still not sure if including the verse, (10 point bonus on the exam for the children who can tell me the poem it's from, I know ~washipuppy does!) made it too ham-fisted. Any thoughts? The three of you who will actually look at this, seeing as it's not SD, yaoi, or involving a dumbass joke?

This came out splendidly! I especially love how detailed Doc Ock's mechanical arms are and the bubbles really help convey a sense of motion. Well, that and I'm a pushover for "Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock" references.

This is an older picture, but I still like it quite a bit. It and TSE.

Often when I see this pop up in my random faves, I go click on it and stare again for a bit.
I know this is super old now, but I still love it. A lot.

I'm still pretty fond of this one as well... in the least, I feel a lot better getting feedback on fanart that took effort than on the Invader Zim cartoons I drew over 10 years ago. Thank you!

T.S. Eliot's "The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock" is my favorite poem. I quote it in my signature and wrote an Otto-centered fanfic named after one of its lines--"The Moment of My Greatness."

Er, yeah, sorry to be digging up the ancient work. This has always been one of my favorite Ock fanarts

I rather like the mechanics of it. (and I apologize for hte pun)

*scrapes Jaw up off the ground* This is EXQUISITE. I love the use of the poem... not enough people really use good quotes like this, as opposed to emo song lyrics with character slitting his or her wrists in the background... this is a much better use...

Of course, I look at it now, and MY first thought is "Full fathom five thy father lies/those are pearls that were his eyes/of his bones are coral made/nothing of him that doth fade/but doth suffer a sea-change/into something rich and strange./Sea-nymphs hourly ring his knell./Hark, I hear them. Ding, Dong, Dell."

Shakespeare geek.

I... I try to avoid using text, poems or songlyrics in pictures, as they tend to either muddle things or become a way for the artist to try and interest people as opposed to the drawing itself.

I couldn't resist shoving T.S.E. into a picture of ol' Otto, though.

Magnificent emotional piece, the detail and tones are perfect for portraying a mood of sadness, yet all the while it is very professional and truly shows the amount of work you must've put into it... Very nicely done indeed...^^

Well, apparently the director asked Molina if he'd be willing to appear in a later film in the same role, and he said "yes"- whether that would constitute a flashback or a return of the character... who knows? Hope springs eternal from a fangirl's breast....

I...have no choice...but to fave this. Oh, my, gosh, it rocks. It's very effective, very moody, and the colors back up all that. The poem fits very well, the shading is wonderful, everything just rocks. My only comment is that Otto has no forehead in the last panel -- his hair appears to be lower on his head than naturally possible. ... I feel so profane for even saying something against this, after the insane amount of work I'm sure you put into it. It's very wonderful.

What did you do this in? Photoshop?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

yang In reply to alcoraiden [2004-12-08 20:36:12 +0000 UTC]

Drew by hand, (Ock) and using the vector paths in photoshop, thanks to my experience with the incredible Adobe Illustrator. I can't draw a straight line, so it was a real pain to do the tentacles all on computer, but still easier and better-looking than the alternative would have been. It took me a loooong time to do this one, though I'm glad that it turned out pretty okay.

As for the hair, uh......... oops? I dunno. Realistically his fringe shouldn't have been getting pressed down, but it looks better and more interesting than if I'd just shown his wrinkled old man forehead.

He died heroically- if he was the "rival", his death would have been a cop-out, but as the villian of the piece, it's pretty darn good to be given a dignified death scene.

T.S. Eliot, "The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock". One of my favourite poems of all time I actually thought about it, too, when I first watched Spidey 2. Never thought about making a comic about it, though, so props to you!

Oh, do not ask, β€œWhat is it?”

Heh, I just noticed, J. Alfred (Molina!) Prufrock. Will the parallels ever cease?

T.S. Eliot, "The Love Song of J. We apparently think alike, but I never thought about drawing it out.

Aww, thank you. My sister is the real poetry lover of the two of us, but I (obviously) have an appreciation for hauntingly beautiful writing... almost makes me wish I was a half-decent poet.

Even at this age, I think a lot of us feel so tired and worn-out. It seems like we have less and less time until our dreams flop and we resign ourselves to mediocrity, sullenly telling those around us, "I coulda' been a contender..."

They, uh..... think of triangles. With nibs on the edges. It's a bit hard to explain- I know there was a website somewhere with a lot of photos of the mechanics and puppeteers making the darn things, but I can't remember the URL for the life of me.

Skylanth In reply to yang [2004-11-15 17:05:21 +0000 UTC]

I've been doing okay with my "Caught in the Web" concept art book, but am always looking for new piccies... In any case, you seem to have the full structure down. I understand and try to work with the triangle thing (each arm, to me, seems to have a triangle cross-section, and very much resemble vertebrae, with the option of course to expand as well as bend), but there are so many details of the structure that I can't begin to encorporate. Oh well. Watch and learn, I guess.

Arrgh.... yeah. Now I can see why he always had those funky rubber tube shaped tentacles in the comic. If they'd had to draw those damn complicated things every time he appeared, he'd have been a one-shot character for sure.

groupie-des-orques [2004-11-12 10:59:04 +0000 UTC]

Looking at this I really get the feeling I'm watching a very good anime. I can actually see him sink, the movement is there, and the sound as well. The last panel is a bit dark compared to the rest, and I had difficulties making out his face at first but I have a crappy monitor anyway so it might just be me. I really like the contrast between the sharp edges of the machinery and the softer lines of the human being. The poetry fits perfectly and adds to the general mood. You really captured his (their?) end, it's very moving. Poor Otto, that's when I imagine all kinds of Deus Ex Machina to come and save him!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

yang In reply to groupie-des-orques [2004-11-12 21:17:17 +0000 UTC]

I drew and penned the figure in by hand, but to make the tentacles I had to use the vector drawing paths in photoshop... it was a bit of work, but I hadn't been satisfied with the way I'd done them in the past, a method which really took as much work but came out lousy. I added a gradient overlay after sticking the three panels together because I did want it to go even darker near the bottom- I'm glad that you can still make his face out at all.

The character from literature I keep thinking of in comparison to Otto is Prospero; unfortunately, our poor Doctor didn't have a Milan to return to when he finally awoke and resolved to "drown his books"...
