Description
What do you do when your family has deep pockets and you have a dream? You design a car what else? The year was 1938. Who designed it? I'll give one last hint, there's a Pittsburgh connection.Adobe Illustrator CS2, Apple G5 Power Mac, OSX Tiger.

This screams "Airstream" era...but that was the fifties I think.
Nice drawing!
Actually it looks a LITTLE like a Batmobile.

Really cool. It's the type of car you could picture Bruce Wayne or Tony Stark driving in the comics.

It is very futuristic, put some bat wings on it and away you go. I think it was used in a movie once.

It would also have been a cool Sean Connery James Bond car. But I can't see any of the other Bonds driving it.

That car would have been perfect for Sean Connery.

Thanks Martin! Rust Heinz designed it. Ironically it was called the Phantom-Corsair.

WOW! That's the Phantom Corsair. I can't decide whether this is beautiful or ugly. I was entertainig the idea of doing a rendering f this car, but it looks as though you've beat me to it.

Yep! It hard to say, it was ahead of it's time, that's for sure.
Working here at Heinz, you get a bit over saturated with Heinz, but they were an amazing family. We can pretty much credit food safety to Henry Heinz and I'm thinking that had Sen. John Heinz not died in a helicopter crash, he would have been President of the United States.
You should still do a rendering of it, I just did this for fun. I'm sure somebody could do it better or put a different spin on it, I say go for it! I was thinking of doing a version in Heinz Red without the fender skirts.

The Heinz family mustn't have been very lucky. First, it was Rust Heinz, who was killed in a car crash at the age of 25, before he could get his car into produstion, then John sr. snuffs it too. They must have had as as much bad luck as the Kennedys.
I read a little article in a book about the 50 worst cars ever built, and there was some driticism of the Corsair's front-end styling and the slab sides, which looked similar to those of the Saracen tanks built at that time. Personally, I think it could have used a little dip in the waistline, towards the rear, and a larger area of glass for the windows at the back.
Now that you mention, maybe I will go for it, and do some art of the PC. Wish me luck!
Best,
D-

They did have their share of tragedy.
That wold have added something to it. Maybe if it had gone into product, some of the design changes may have found their way into production. A convertible would have been cool.
Go for it!

It would still be ineteresting to see you "Heinz" version of the PC. Perhaps I could design my improved version of the car.
One other thing. You know the openings for the small lights (I'm not sure what they're called) on the bottom of the front? The shape of the openings could have done with pointing forward. It would have given a little more "flow" to the design.

Yeah, it really is unique and when you consider it was 1938, it makes it all the more amazing. I think they only built one, but there were plans to build a couple dozen.

No kidding, I would really love to driving around in a car that would look like this. Talk about turning some heads, this one would do it...
I like the retro cars that are coming out but if GM or Ford had the guts to really do something different, they should head back to the past and all of the great designs.
It's sad seeing America and the automotive industry in collapse and at the same time, I think the corporate America forgot it's roots.
We have been producing generic cars when we should be producing cars that represent the way our country is. The Germans do, the Italians do etc, and they stay to true to the way of their heritage. We should be the same and maybe the automotive industry would come back....nice job.

Designed by Heinz, the same guy in the Ketchup buisness, it was undergoing evaluation to hit the market when Heinz died in an accident, which did not involve this car....
