Description
Here are two panels from Sonic issue 166. On the left, we see my original pencils, where Sonic is bawling over the loss of his children in the future. And on the right is the toned down version for the final product.Related content

Typical game purist - "There are certain lines you never cross with the Sonic The Hedgehog character and series. Β And this is one of the examples of where Archie crossed that line."Β
Translation: He's caught red-handed showing feelings... Showing feelings of an almost human nature! This will not do!Β
An open minded guy like me - This one of the areas that Archie Sonic does better then the games. Having our main character do more then just run around going " Sonics the name, speed's my game".Β

Well spoken, my friend! I wish that the pencil version made it into the final. The final product just looks half baked and boring...
But I digress...

It also proves that Sega always looked over the comic.
But considering that Sonic continued to show strong emotion after this issue,
it also proves that Sega's control over book had simply just stayed the same even after the lawsuit.

I love these. I honestly love both versions: the originals and the toned down ones. While It'd be nice to see sonic show his emotions like that, this is a kids comic so I get why sega toned it down. Still, amazing job, and I consider yours canon! Great job

It's very painful to look at this. Lots of raw emotion happening on the left side.Β

wow.....amazing...we clearly feel bad for him.. I understand SEGA but geez, giving THAT much expression is really touching the soul..we clearly see he lost his loved ones, we see deeper in the character.. that is really important.

I might sound selfish but theres reasons I dont want to buy the Archie Comics anymore. The biggest was the relationships for me. Seeing Sally with Sonic was my drive to reading. If I got that I was happy with everything else.
Sega stuck there hands in them and made it like the games which means, no relationships and the characters will have personalities like wallpaper.

The same for me, Now that they pretty much scrapped the relationships and stuff, it's feels so much more boring. This is What Made the comics better Than the Games. Now the comics are nothing special anymore

I think it was because SEGA didn't want Sonic to show too much emotions. They wanted tone down for the comic.

When the comics are such an emotion blast, and when it's considerable that Sonic suggests ways to control emotions, like that time in Sonic and the Secret Rings when he suggested to, if I'm not wrong, the genie Shahra that she needs to just let her tears flow when she felt sad, I think that SEGA has made a bad decision when asking Yardley to tone down that scene.
Well, Comic Panels still are, technically speaking, shots of scenes. In fact, the non-toned down versions of these "scenes" could be how they happened seconds after the toned-down versions took place...Right?

Yeah I prefer your pencil lineart. In the top left, both Sonic and Tails are showing true emotion, but on the right, Sonic just looks bewildered
Same with the bottom. Left: manly emotion. right: just looking grumpy

Loss of his children in the future ? What happens to Manic & Sonia ? Sounds devastating.

I believe the special issue "Brave New World" suffered a similar fate, where Pat Spaz was forced to redraw a panel where Sonic looked too depressed at Sega's urging. To think that Sega are clamping down on artistic expression to narrow Sonic's emotions. Losing your children like this deserves the kind of breakdown you originally drew.

Well you know SEGA can't have our character showing to much emotion except for that old , tired out, hip 90s smug attitude that he's been stuck with since and only got a bit more annoying now that he can talk. I don't have a problem with him it's just his attitude towards everything in the games is irritating after a while. I too prefer the one on the top and bottom left because it makes the scene more impact.Β

It's just my opinion though, but I think so they should have kept the upper left one, but the lower left is better for Sonic's character. I mean he would cry for a while but then a little while later, not that much. Β

Why does Sega not get this. If they put less restrictions in then the writers have the freedom to write better stories meaning that more people will buy all the Sonic stuff you want them to buy
