Description
Here are two panels from Sonic issue 166. On the left, we see my original pencils, where Sonic is bawling over the loss of his children in the future. And on the right is the toned down version for the final product.Related content

I know that the comics said this, but the first game to say he ate chili dogs was Sonic Unleashed.
BTW, is 226 out?

The left drawings make it very emotional, and makes more sense to the event. Though The right panel looks like he's in shock.
I wish I could read the comics :<

Wow... I've really underestimated you. When reading recent issues, I sometimes think your work is bland, but now I see that's just because Archie doesn't always let us see you at your best, like here. Great job, even Spaziante and Axer don't often draw Sonic with this much emotion.

I really think the original on the left makes more sense, if I recall before hand he went to the past to save the future?
As his reward for doing so, he comes back to find both his children have been erased from existance save for his mind, and that his wife is with someone else. I think he had the right to have a breakdown.

I like the one on the left. It makes me want to cry do to emotions sonic is goin through, I wish that they could keep it, but I understand. If they didn't want it like that, it is still good on the original. Great work.

This original panels made more sense. Not that the edit is bad, but his whole world is shattered because his kids are gone, so his face should have more agony to it. Oh well, it still turned out great, like all your lineart.

Sonic is really falling apart in the originals, you'd think with the way the comic industry is today that the blue blur could cry about his kids being phased out of reality, wouldn't you?
But that aside, both sets are fantastic looking! Your work on the STH comics reinvigorated my love for them. I hadn't read an issue of Sonic since around Endgame but I picked up Sonic #200 and was blown away by the art. I'm a big fan Mr. Yardley and I would love to meet you and Spaz someday.

I finally got my bunch of back-issues and #166 is definitely one of my favorite issues, probably because of this nice-insight you let us see. It really puts quite a background to the whole situation. I also find it interesting how you change the original panels so much. It's so cool!
Keep it up, Mr. Yardley!

Tracy, do you really like drawing Sonic with emotions? Cuz I noticed it alot while you draw Sonic's facial expressions in the latest comic issues I love Sonic's emotions too.

I prefer the left one, 'cause it's the one that makes the most sense and it's the one that speaks the most. On the right one, there's still this flaw of making Sonic almost emotionally jaded. The left one makes more sense giving the circumstances, I mean, He lost his children, so he should be crushed.
Granted, maybe he had time to "heal" a bit in between the lost of his children and his reunion with Tails and Lara-Su, but even that his kind of a stretch.

Graycat1 In reply to ??? [2009-03-18 04:57:19 +0000 UTC]
Hm, I like them both. The right side shows less emotion. Sonic has never been the type to betray his feelings easily, despite the burning agony he may be feeling inside. So that same side makes more sense, in a way.
On the left side, Sonic is overflowing with despair. And no one can blame him. It IS his children.
So, I think in the end, I like the left side more. The readers crave more emotion from Sonic. We just don't get enough of these moments.

*sigh* I have SO much to learn and so many tools to buy, I can't even imagine how hard it was for you to learn to be that good! Lately I can't even get the hands the right size... oh well, I'm still really young. I'll learn, and someday I'll be as good as you. And personally, I like the second one! I mean, they're both pretty good, but Sonic looks stronger on the right. After all, he is a role model for thousands of kids across the continent! Let alone the globe! Great job again, totally a fav.

I think I prefer the raw ones-- the harder emotions seem to fit better, but I guess it'd be a little harsh for the kiddies who also read the comic.
Good job, all around though, keep it up with the monthly Archies!
