My Theory: Werner Werman was caught by the enemy during WW1 and was imprisoned. The enemy wanted Werner to work alongside someone named Scar, but Werner refused and even tried to break out several times. Then, one night, as Werner tried to break out again, he had an unexpected visitor; The Devil himself. Werner didn't believe that he was facing The Devil, blaming it on fatigue and other logical reasons, so The Devil showed him his history; his training as a mechanic, entering the army, and most importantly, his desire to invent an invention that would help the war effort and be useful for him later. He had taken a temporary leave to work on the invention, which ended up being a shrinking device. Unknown to him, the caretaker of the cottage he was staying at was a spy and knocked him out and kidnapped him and the device. Werner saw these memories and asked what was the point, and The Devil responded with a deal; a change of fate in exchange for his soul. Werner still believed this scenario was a figment though, so The Devil decided to play with him, a test of courage he called it. All Werner had to do was watch the fate that he would have to face should he refuse to sign the deal. Werner, confident in his bravery, agreed and soon regretted it when he saw his fate. Turns out, the Scar mention by the enemy, was a torturer that shared a similar desire to Werner, with his invention being a DNA replicator that can clone someone that just died. He intended to test both his and Werner's inventions to see if they could work together, but since Werner refuses to work with him, he will be the test subject. Werner watches as his future-self gets shrunk and Scar presents his executioner, a cat. Werner reached out to save his future self, but the vision ended and Werner suddenly woke in a dark place that The Devil revealed to be "the belly of the beast", his consequence for showing fear. Werner's courage broke upon hearing those words and, realizing his fate, begged for it to be changed as the stomach acid burned his skin. The Devil let him sign the contract and Werner soon woke up back in the trenches, several days before he was captured. Werner took the opportunity to save himself and stayed out of enemies hands, but the old fate and the deal he had made still haunted him long after the war...
