Description
Roughly a million years ago, in the early-mid Pleistocene, in what is now Iberia, a herd of southern mammoths (Mammuthus meridionalis) makes a journey through the greenish meadows. These formidable beasts are among the largest animals of their environment. Smaller herbivores, like the female Megaloceros that appears in the picture, sometimes enjoy the company of these behemoths, while the carnivores, like the Homotherium we observe in the image, look cautiously at the giants in hopes they won't mind their presence. These giant proboscideans resemble us a lot of modern elephants, for they don't have the shaggy coat of the woolly mammoth, the most famous mammoth species that would only first appear many hundreds of thousands of years later. The southern mammoth, instead, shares only its mighty size, coupled with peculiarly curved gigantic tusks, to resemble its later relative. For now the titans patrol a much warmer world, one that provides a landscape far removed from the modern days.
