Description Ep.02: Saved by the Bell

Surprisingly the swift Velociraptor was rapid to understand that sneaking into a Protoceratops nest is a grave mistake. It didn't took long for the mother to rush its way to the nest to scare off the predator. Panza starts crawling to the border of the nest while her siblings also rupture the leathery egg shell. Protoceratops are gregarious beasts, and Panza's mother is not alone, with many other breeding females raising their nests not very far away. Living in herds, Protoceratops engage in constant social contact, as observed by one of the adult males that peeks in what could be his own offspring. Panza is welcomed to the wide limits of what is now the Djadokhta Formation, which represents a dry and arid central asian environment that represents the late Campanian of the Late Cretaceous period. We are six million years before the asteroid that will end the age of the dinosaurs, but the dinosaurs themselves ignore the predicament they are oblivious about, and continue as diverse as they ever was. The company of the Protoceratops is unexpectedly shared by a lonely Gobiates (a primitive Cretaceous frog) and a passing Udanoceratops tschizhovi mother, which is accompanied by her sole surviving offspring. Unlike Protoceratops, Udanoceratops are more solitary, but that is not stressful for them, as they are already one of the largest animals of this place, and are comparatively immune to the attacks of some of the most hyperactive macropredators of the Djadokhta as full adults. Despite being so huge, they are actually less related to the much larger ceratopsids that typically exist on the other side of the world, in North America, with Protoceratops curiously sharing a closer taxonomical position to them.
