Description
Here's another Bochon Vault comic. This one is just a short one from an anthology a couple years back. It's pretty different from most of what I do, it deals with dark stuff and, well, depression. I'm not sure how successful is it, but there you go. It's cerebral, sticky, weird; that's the brain for you.EDIT JANUARY 23 MMX:
WOW! Thanks, everyone! It's an honor to see so many people responding to this spooky little comic. There's much more on the way, I promise!

Like the dark humor. It really shows how a cycle can keep on going.

Ha... Speaking as someone who goes through this cycle many a time, I must say you portrayed it perfectly well.
You always want to rescue yourself from the deep, dark emotions and thoughts, and there's a brief high, and you think you can make it... Before the slightest thing sends you slipping down that dank well again, and it starts all over again.
Congrats on the DD, you completely deserve it. :3

CongratS! though I'm very confused as to why the girl ontop of the well did that... seems unnecessary lol

Looking at this it looks more that the other girl crying was trying to stop the other girl from climbing the rope cause she knows that it will be cut.

... The thing is, when I saw it... I guessed the one with the rope cut it only because the one climbing up kicked the crying one down... if you know what I mean. Like, we have to get out of this together, or not at all... I know that I wouldn't want that selfish part of me to be let out into the world... -tilts head- I mean, I can see where the whole depression part comes in, but with that third, crying girl, it changes the whole story for me... hm.

Since I didn't manage to find a copy, I can't remember the film title. But it might have been.
I've never been good with names.
Including people's names
1/3 of my Manga collection Japanese only. Plus the sound track on Appleseed is better if you turn the English off

Yeah, Bizenghast is by an American author, but the style is a bit similar, even though I've never read the series.
I'm terrible with peoples names. It's so embarrassing.

So, what's your name again
I need to sort my Manga to make sure I don't buy something I have already. :/

It's not often that I come across a piece of work that leaves me at an absolute loss for words. This piece is simply amazing: it's dark, morbid and the style simply enhances the gothic effect of the comic. Friggin' amazing, madam.

What amuses me is the fact that despite you had clearly stated this is a piece about depression, people comment about "how the human kind can be evil" ...

yfrontninja In reply to badbadtzmaru [2010-01-23 21:21:53 +0000 UTC]
I definitely want to leave it open to interpretation, since the human experience is different for everyone. I think that's the big driver behind making it a silent comic; keeping it ambiguous. In the end, I'm happiest when a work that I've done generates any kind of response or makes people think/question.
Thanks for your insight!

...Well,you're right,I can agree about making people think and freedom of interpretation
But I -personally-like to see what the AUTHOR put behind his work...and let's say that knowing about depression,I see so much truth in this work that I'll like to make other people that doesn't know about it to see and understand what it means

I like it that's open for interpretation, but I always feel curious when it's like this as to what was the artist's original interpretation. Is the girl outside of the well repeatedly throwing ropes to the other girls, and then cutting them? I might get it... If you say it's about depression, I feel like... It hurts a lot when the rope is cut and you fall back to the bottom of the well, then you realize the other girl (also you) was trying to warn you all along... It would hurt a lot less it Mean Girl (the girl outside the well) just let them stay there.
Also, they look exactly the same! this is scary. It also adds to the idea that they are the same person.
Thoughtful.

yfrontninja In reply to notepadgirl [2010-01-24 07:30:09 +0000 UTC]
Well, if you want my personal interpretation... (hee hee)
This comic is meant to read as an internal struggle. These characters are all one girl, however different sides of her subconscious personified. In many cases with depression, a person goes through cycles of emotional stability or chaos. These are highs and lows which are often brought about by the individual; in this case, she is self-destructive. The cycle that she is going through is pretty terrifying, in that she allows herself to see hope in overcoming this struggle, despite the nagging fears that keeps her down, only to destroy that hope in the end out of the subconscious necessity to endure the cycle once again. It's not a simple struggle, each side of the conflict needs to be resolved in someway for the cycle to stop.
I hope that makes some sort of sense. I'm actually really tired right now ha ha ha.
My main joy in doing something like this is hearing about what other people read in the work. So thank you for contributing your thoughts. I think you got it spot on!

That's basically how I read into it. The way you stated that makes it sound like sabotaging your own happiness. I'm sure everyone's done that before, even subconsciously. So even if someone hasn't been through any severe depression, they can still put themselves in this comic. Great job leaving it open for interpretation. It's definitely interesting to see how people read into it.
