Description Haha long overdue fanart of one of my favorite characters from my favorite book series, Percy Jackson and the Olympians.

I wanted to animate a run cycle, and poor Percy just happened to be my victim...
If anyone has some critiques or suggestions, just comment below. I would love to be able to animate better!

Wow, nice job! Do you know how long it took you to animate this?
I enjoyed reading those books. I only got a chance to read the first two though. ^^'

Hmm, it was so long ago when I animated this, so I'm not sure. Maybe 2-3 hours? Maybe more maybe less? It was one of my first times animating so it probably took me a while.

You should finish it if you have the time too! I remember reading them in Middle School and thinking those books were the best, but in retrospect I think I may have outgrown some elements of the book ahahaa. But still I really enjoyed reading them

It's really impressive that you animated something that seems so complicated for one of your first times. What program did you use?

Yeah, I know what you mean. Back in Middle School, I was really into the Warrior Cats series by Erin Hunter. Have you ever read them? I kind of outgrew that series, but it was so much fun reading them. I have fond memories of rping and drawing cats. Lol.Β

I drew each frame on Paint Tool SAI and then put them all together in photoshop. In retrospect just using photoshop or flash would have been faster, but you learn from your mistakes I guess.Β
A run cycle is actually one the easiest things to animate, because there are only a few key frames. You should try it out if you ever get the chance to. It's not as hard as it seems. It's just the drawing part that takes forever....

No I never read the Warrior Cat series, but I knew a few people who did. I was always just really confused as to what was going on. I think I picked up a book once but all the character names seemed really similar to each other so I got confused???

Oh nice! I love the way the line art and coloring seems to appear on Paint Tools Sai. I don't have it, but I've seen a lot of artwork from people who use it. Do you know where I can buy it at?Β
I didn't know there were only a few key frames. Thanks! I think I'll give it a try sometime. I'm still trying to learn anatomy, and I don't have much experience drawing legs and especially feet.Β

Yeah, the Warrior Cat series has a large cast of characters. Understanding the ranking system helps though. For instance, all apprentices have 'paw' at the end of their names, and their names generally correlate with their physical appearance or defining characteristic like "Graystripe" or "Runningpaw". When I read the books, I pretty much read one novel to the next in sequence. So, there wasn't much of a lapse for me to forget what happened and who all of the characters were. Later on, when I tried to get back into the Β series though, I found it really confusing because I forgot a lot about who was who in relations and such.Β

You can buy it from the developer's site. I think you just have to search Paint Tool SAI in google and it will be the first or second link there. It's actually super cheap compared to other programs like Photoshop, but I think there are also ways you can get it for free if you want to go that route... I really like it and I use it for all my drawings

Yeah I know! Feet are so hard for me to draw too... and hands. I usually just search up pose generators on google and draw those poses, making careful note of the hands or feet. It helps me learn it better because I can imagine where the hands or feet would be in a real pose rather than just a detached hand reference... idk though whatever resource works for you, i'm sure its out there

Ohh nice! haha sounds like a fun book that I might have enjoyed when I was a kid, but I think there are some books that I just outgrow or don't seem as good as they used to be when I reread it at an older age

That's awesome! Thanks for letting me know! Do you know if its compatible for Macs?Β

Hands are difficult for me at times, but feet are even more so because I rarely ever draw them so I don't have much experience. For a long time, I would look up a lot of references to help me with anatomy. Now, I try to imagine what a pose would look like in my head and try to draw it, but it is still something I'm trying to work on. When I can't seem to draw anything satisfactory, I use anatomy references to help me though.

Yeah, I loved reading the Warrior Cats series back then. ^^ It's written by several authors that collaborate to write the stories. I know the feeling too.

Ahh I think Paint Tool SAI might just be for PC, but you're going to need to search around because I'm not sure...

That's interesting. Yeah anatomy references always seem to help. I definitely need work on anatomy as well so I'll be sure to give those a shot

I think what you have is awesome! One thing I noticed though is that when he looks back the head turn kind of 'pops'. I think adding an inbetween there would fix it right up and smooth it out more! : ] Nice job!

Wow, thank you so much!

Yeah I was thinking there was something wrong with the head... thank you so much for the suggestion. I guess I'll have to keep that in mind next time I animate. haha once again thank you for your kind comment!

This is pretty good! I'm jealous of your ability to animate to be honest. Β

Ah wow thank you! Yeah, I'm immensely jealous of people who can animate a bunch of thing well. So far I can only animate Percy Jackson running... cries. I guess animation just takes a lot of patience and time... which I don't have.Β

I know. I have so much respect for the animators of those early disney movies with hand drawn frames. Like wow. I wonder how long that would have taken.

Yeah at least on the computer the computer does some of the work but hand drawn... must have taken ages! I can only imagine. I guess they have several animators and such but even so.

Yeah I know! That kind of animation is crazy, but if it weren't for them I guess a huge part of my childhood would be gone... Disney movies are the best!

I like Disney movies but I have to say a lot of japanese animated movies are amazing as well. Especially since some of them look so real.

Oh my gosh I know! Like Studio Ghibli and 5cm per second and Kotonowa no wina. Ahh I read somewhere that Miyazaki used to look over the films frame by frame. Like imagine how many frames are in an entire movie! Yeah so I saw a bunch of GIFs of kotonowa no wina before I decided to watch it and I thought there were photographed...

I think I saw the same gifset because thats what I was thinking of! Was there a person drawing and rain falling in the sidewalk?Β
