Hey guys! I remember submitting a poll a long time ago (back when I still had my premium ahhaaah) asking what kind of tutorial I should make. Surprisingly a tutorial on finding inspiration was the most popular choice, so I decided that my first tutorial should be about exactly that. I'm hoping to make some process tutorials soon though.
I've struggled with art block a lot in the past, especially since I only draw when I don't have homework and that's really rare. It's hard to get back into drawing when you haven't done it in a while. And it's hard to start drawing again when you just finished a major project or a large piece of artwork that took a long time. I hope that this tutorial will help some people. I've just listed a few ways I commonly try and get over art block.
I also said in the tutorial to look up reference images and draw them for practice, so I'm listing a few links for good websites to practice with.
Pixelovely
Posemaniacs
Quickposes
Also, over the years, I've collected very helpful tutorials from everything to quick sketching to coloring gold. CHECK IT OUT HERE
And here's a link to my inspiration tag on tumblr, if you want to check it out as well. It keeps me inspired when I'm out of ideas. CHECK IT OUT HERE
Thanks for reading!

Thanks for making this! It's nice to hear someone else's take on how to handle art block. I've been carrying around a notebook with me to keep my ideas in. Then, I can look back and draw some scenes. ^^

Oh that's awesome! For me, I'm kind of absent minded so it's hard to remember to carry around a sketchbook, but that's so cool that you do.

Thanks! I came up with some of my own characters, and when I'm bored I like to imagine little stories. It's hard to keep track of the plot completely in my head, so I decided to write them down. I found a decent sized notebook that can fit in my purse or messenger bag, which has really been quite convenient for me.

Oh that's awesome! haha for some reason it's hard for me to come up with my own characters and think of plots for them.

It was for me too. I think developing characters can take a while. Sometimes I have all of these personality traits and characteristics that come together, while other times it is more of a gradual process.

Oh that's awesome! Yeah it's always a gradual process for me. And when I do write, its hard to keep them in character because I don't really have their personality down solid in the first place haaa

I have that trouble sometimes too, especially when there are multiple characters interacting with one another at the same time. I think it's kind of helpful to find a defining characteristic or stereotype to help provide a basis for their personality, and then gradually fill in all of the little details that make them who they are.

Yeah that's true. It does help when I have a stereotype of characteristic I'm building off of, but I also try and make my characters kind of complicated and have a lot of layers, as well as act different depending on who they're with, so it just gets super complicated and confusing haaa

Yeah, same here! I love complex characters. It really helps make them unique. Developing characters with layers definitely is a gradual process.

This is actually helpfull XD and i have a question, and i think this is part of inspiration, when you look for other artists and etc, you just look and you feel like"....i will never be able to draw this" and then *drop dead* what do you do when you feel like it?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Yiamme In reply to the-dragon-heart [2014-12-13 21:56:21 +0000 UTC]
Oh that'a a good question! That's a problem I struggle with a lot actually, because there's such an abundance of talented and young artists here on dA I constantly feel like I'm running out of time to become a "good" artist. What I try to do is recognize that they're just further along in their art journey than I am, and instead of feeling overwhelmed by their skill, I try and step back and see what I really like about their art and incorporate it in my own art. Say I really like this artist and I love their colors. Instead of feeling like I'll never be able to draw like them, I try and use their color choices for the next piece I draw and see where it takes me.

Thank you for this, I'm sure many will find it useful. In my own experience, art block is usually more of an excuse than a real "block". And like you said, if you don't feel that creative juice flowing, do drills. Do drawing/painting/whatever-is-applicable exercises, even if they sound like the most boring thing to do. Usually the mind gets very creative when you do something boring, so with enough drills you'll practise your skills and most likely get a new idea.

This is really helpful and original! You don't see inspiration tutorials everyday ^^
I agree that it's more lack of motivation than anything else... it's not that you lack the ideas, it's that everything sounds lame when you're not motivated enough!

Yiamme In reply to lu--24 [2014-12-06 21:45:10 +0000 UTC]
ahh thank you! I've often struggled with finding ideas so I thought the tutorial would be something useful to make. It's hard to make ideas seem not lame when you're in an art block.
