I can live with Starlight's redemption. I just can't believe Twilight punished someone petty in comparison.

Grogar three lackeys all did much pettier things compared to Starlight. But if she can be reformed, so can the lackeys.

Those villains all did serious crimes and even tried committing murder. Those all look more than petty.Β

Compared to trying to start the apocalypse, murder is a petty thing.

Yeeeeeah.....
I'm just gonna sit here in the corner and enjoy Starlight as a character. No matter how "badly written" she is. Say what you want about my taste in characters...Β

I've NEVER bought Starlight Glimmer's redemption.

I've NEVER understood the people that say they like her as a redeemed character, or think that her redemption was done well.

Some characters can be redeemed, and have it done well. I'm not disputing that.

But Starlight...

She basically broke time. Ruined the whole world several times over, all to get back at one mare.

And not only that, she got into the whole "cult-leader/brainwashing" thing... just because a friend moved away.

That's not an origin story, FiM writers: that'sΒ a *parody* of an origin story.

I'm sorry, if I've offended some fan of the character, but really, that's what I think. They should have just kept Starlight as a villain. >_<

I think it also helped that Iago made the decision to turn good on his accord, when he realized Jafar didn't care about him and quite frankly would just use him as a pawn and dispose of him at the first chance. Starlight didn't even accept that her own actions would doom everyone to a terrible future, and tried to justify it with one bad experience from her childhood.

She was in denial. I mean, would YOU believe that if the six random people that ruined your hard life's work is so important that the whole world would be DEAD if you prevented them from meeting? Β

This isn't a matter of right and wrong. I'm just saying that there's more to her actions than "because she's evil" and even a little understandable if you think about it. Not really excusable, but understandable.Β

So how exactly am I in denial, huh? Because I can put myself in someone else's shoes? Because I can empathize. Because I can look past the surface? Β

It's one of those "I see it, but I don't believe it"

Also Twilight is a very powerful unicorn as well. So as far as Starlight was concerned, Twilight was just tricking her to make her stop. After all, Twilight used every other tactic to try and stop her.Β

Maybe that could've been forgiven if Starlight's backstory made more sense. Losing one friend doesn't add up to becoming a sadistic dictator trying to impose your will on others. Especially not if you never tried to get in touch with said friend.

MegaAnimationFan In reply to SPB2015 [2017-06-14 19:52:07 +0000 UTC]

Oh THIS again?! How many times do I have to say it to you people. She. Was. A. CHILD!! She didn't know any better. Adults in the show have made even more stupid decisions for lesser reasons. Need I remind you of Sunset Shimmer? Why did she do what she did again? Oh yeah, because she didn't get what she wanted, when she wanted. AND she was old enough to know better. It was all a thirst for power. But it's never explained WHY she wanted that power. At least Starlight was hurt while very young and did what she did to make sure it doesn't happen again. And in turn make the world a better place in freeing others from the same pain. Sunset was just.......stupid. And if the comic is anything to go by, she was ALWAYS like this. There was no build up to her "fall". Β

Also, she didn't go from zero to a hundred. There was a huge gap between when Sunburst left and when she made that village. There's a lot of wiggle room for possibilities on what went on through her head all that time, but everyone just refuses to look past the surface. It's astonishing, really. I mean, anything could have happened during that time. And it's been established MULTIPLE times that Starlight is her own worst enemy. So really, she lead herself astray.

And would you really try to keep in contact with someone you were convinced didn't care about you? I don't think so. Β  Β  Β Β

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

SPB2015 In reply to MegaAnimationFan [2017-06-14 20:54:52 +0000 UTC]

There was NOTHING to convey Sunburst didn't care about her, if that was their intention they needed to show, not tell.Β

That's the entire problem with Starlight in that case, there is NOTHING to convey how she went from broken hearted about one friend moving away, to outright HATING cutie marks to the point where she would spite all of Equestria! Thsi was something that NEEDED to be EXPLAINED!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

MegaAnimationFan In reply to SPB2015 [2017-06-14 21:03:56 +0000 UTC]

It IS explained. Through another character. Applebloom in Bloom and Gloom. Yeah, remember that episode? When Applebloom had endless nightmares about cutie marks over the mere THOUGHT of one of them getting their cutie mark before the other? And it wasn't just her, it was all three of them had similar nightmares. I think it's safe to say EVERY child goes through this. But Luna wasn't around to sooth Starlight's fears when she was young, so OF COURSE it snowballed out of control.

With that in mind, it's pretty self explanatory. It's not the show's fault that you can't read in between the lines and want to be spoon fed to ya.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

SPB2015 In reply to MegaAnimationFan [2017-06-14 21:10:58 +0000 UTC]

The difference is, Apple Bloom found other friends to hang out with, and she didn't try to start a cult or take over Equestria because of her fears.

Heck, Moondancer handled losing a friend better than Starlight. As much as I think Moondancer overreacted (so one friend didn't show up to your party, but you had three other friends perfectly willing to spend time with you, besides that said friend happens to be the pupil of your nation's ruler, you kind of have to expect they could be sent away on a moment's notice), at least she had the decency to keep her destructive ways to herself and found a way to channel those frustrations when forced out into the open.

Starlight was a great villain, but the writers were so eager to redeem her in the wake of Sunset Shimmer's redemption, that they forgot how you make a redemption work.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

MegaAnimationFan In reply to SPB2015 [2017-06-14 21:30:17 +0000 UTC]

That's the POINT! Starlight had NO ONE! And so why is going to extreme lengths not understandable? She had no one to turn to so she took matters in her own hands. That's a natural reaction to someone who's spent all their life alone and wants to DO something about it that doesn't result in another possible heart break.Β

Oh don't you start that "Starlight was made and reformed because of Sunset" bull shit! The entirety of the season 5 script was finished BEFORE Rainbow Rocks aired. And just because YOU don't like it, doesn't mean it doesn't work. So that statement is just pretentious and stupid. (Plus, Sunset's redemption isn't perfect either. I'd argue it's just as flawed as Starlight's.) Β Β

Look pal, these writers work HARD to make the best possible show they can despite the limitations that Hasbro, the time restraints, and the target audience. So with statements like that, it really makes me wonder if this fandom really respects these guys or even like the show if all you guys do is complain. You think it's so easy? You think you can do better? Prove it. Get a job in the writing field, write for a show with a target audience much younger than us, deal with a crap ton of restrictions, and let's see how YOU feel when all the "fans" keep talking shit about it! I'd LOVE to see how it'll turn out.Β
