Description
Some of my watchers told me they were curious to see a recent step by step from me (and I feel so honored you can't imagine) so, here's how I work :>
I work on Paint Too Sai
- Sketch - in red lines on a dark bg - yes I allow myself to use references, and you should do it too!
- Lineart - in white on a dark bg (feels more comfortable for my eyes than dark lines on clear bg) > Pencil tool, stabilisator at 10, thin lines
- Colors in 3-5 layers in a stack of layers - don't hesitate to use degrades even where there no degrades. It adds deepness to the piece and breaks the flat
- Then I duplicate the colors stack, fusionate all the colors to have them on one layer
At this point, the layers I have are: the dark bg, one layer of lines, and one layer of colors. (a bit more if I want to keep all the colors layers if I'm unsure).
- Then, my fav part: I put a grey layer above the colors layer - it's easier to shade on a grey flat thingy.
(Tip: you can do the shading before the colors, it doesn't change many things! I just prefer doing the shading at the end cause that's my fav part.)
1. first shadings (multiply mode)
2. Darkest shades (multiply mode)
3. Blended lights (overlay mode) Tip: the lights can pass in the shadows! Makes the light more realistic
4. Backlights (luminosity mode) Tip: better if you let the backlight in a contrasted color!
5. Additional light (luminosity for glow - regular white for reflects like metal)
6. Delete the grey layer
7. Change the shading and light's colors to adapt to the design color (using the simple "hue" tool to see what looks better)
8. Add a bg
9. With the bucket tool, fill a new layer (which is above all the other layers) with the dominant color of your artpiece (here, it's a soft pink) or a contrasted one! Then put this layer in a cool mode (here, it's overlay mode), then reduce opacity (here: 15% opacity)
10 opt. Add sparkles - I love sparkles!
Small tip: My cell shading and cell light seems complex, but I don't do it in one shot. I have a sketch for the shadows and lights too!

Thank you so much for sharing this with me on the Discord! Very helpful. I will for sure be trying this technique out. Just a quick question: what are backlights?

Ahah no problem ^^
Backlights are a second source of lighting, in general in the opposite of the normal lightsource. It's often more discreet, sometimes just a lightey line in the shadows, and it helps to add volume :} It's pretty useful in general, and even more when you're working on a piece with a lot of shadows, like in Carnifex, this piece ^ You can see that I add 2 layers of shading and it's very dark, then the light for contrast, then a specific layer above the shading that highlights ever details of the back: this is backlight.
I also made quickly a little example:

I recommand the backlight to not have a too bright color tho.
if you have any other question, feel free to ask ^^

The process only lacks one thing: the amount of time and effort you've put into this piece! It's incredible to look at this piece and still notice new details everytime. People always say art takes hours to create and seconds to consume, but this piece is truly the exception, and you can be proud of that! You've made so much progress and so little time and I'm amazed you still call me "sempai" I clearly have nothing else to teach for lineart or anyhting else for that matter:
You've mastered your technique perfectly, and I can't wait to see what this glorious imagination and hand of yours will create next!

Pftftftf I'm... I have no words, I'm speechless rn
Truth is half the details were made randomly and I was like "ok, I don't understand what I'm doing, I have no clue how I'll shade it - this has no concrete shape"
I'm truely honored by your comment, and I just dont know what to say actually - luckily I was sitting on my chair when reading your comment!
I think no matters our skills you will always remain a sempai for me. Remember who gave me my first tablet? I was drawing like a 10yo, I was afraid of digital, and art were YOUR thing, but you believed in me, and this have no price <3 I remember when you gave me my first paint tool sai tips... "Aaaaah I have to look at the screen but not where I draw?? My brain is not ready!!" "Lineart? nah, not my thing.." and you always been so patient with me, and you gave me ALL your tips, and you globaly did so much for me!
Half your gallery is filled of artpieces you made for me, and each time you post something you never cease to amaze me, to inspire me, and fuck this word is very important. This is why you're my Sempai!
Anyway, thanks a lot for this super motivational comment, now I feel pressured xD but motivated! (I'll be afraid to post my shitty sketches ahah) You're perfect <3
