Description
βIt is a curious sensation: the sort of pain that goes mercifully beyond our powers of feeling. When your heart is broken, your boats are burned: nothing matters any more. It is the end of happiness and the beginning of peace.β- George Bernard Shaw
...My small protest to the dreaded "sequel".
Leave the well enough alone, please!

Ooh, now that, I would love to see.
His time in Persia is quite intriguing, and I believe it makes up a huge part of who he is later in his life.
That's one of the gripes I had with the 2004 movie, which completely left that part out... :/
Oh well...we can only wait and see.
Thanks again.

Indeed.
I think this ultimately is what endears that man to me.
If only I could climb up on that stage and give him a hug at the end of the show...
Thank you for your kind words.
It really does mean a lot to me.

Thank you for your kind words.
I've seen the show quite a few times, but it still brings tears to my eyes at the end.
It has a very special place in my heart and continues to inspire me.
If I can capture and express even just a glimmer of that, I'd be content...

Lovely work of art.
Also against the sequel. Of all possible dreaded things to make a sequel with a story where the main character actually DIES (ALW just had him disappear I think), the phantom of manhattan. And the king of bad sequels, George Lucas is to work on the project as well.
Way to kill Leroux's classic D:<

And I do see Erik as a man of poise - makes him even more endearing at moments of his weakness...

I was trying to experiment with using less definition lines - maybe that's part of it...
Light and shadow alone can easily create an atmosphere, trying to capture it is an entirely different story.

Oh wow. I thought it was a photo at first too.
And I hate that dreaded sequel already, it makes me agressive and gives me ulcers. Unless they really really do a good job storywise, other than what I'll think they do, somebody needs to punjab ALW for it...
The picture is beautifully by the way, it captures the depression and sorrow perfectly, the pose is excellent. At the same time the light indicates the near ending. Ah.. I got so many thoughts on that part, but I won't elaborate all of that here. XD

That's what I was aiming for, exactly, to evoke people's imagination with it.
So thank you for that.
That's the problem I have with the sequel, I think - that it spells things out too much.

Wow, this is beautiful. The lighting especially is fantastic...it sort of represents his segue from the "darkness of his obsession" so to speak, to something new (and hopefully brighter). Very masterfully done!
And I am echoing everyone else here, but I have a healthy amount of trepidation for that sequel, too. Tread carefully, please, Mr. Webber!

I wanted people to see whatever their imagination took them in that light, which I believe is the beauty of the ending of the original show.
I adore the way you described it - it really is a journey for him, isn't it?
As for the sequel, I was rather hoping it would not coming to fruition, to be honest.

Sequels are rarely done right, if at all.
I, for one, would like to leave things the way they are - loose ends tied, but with enough ambiguity that the rest is left up to everyone's imagination.
Because I believe what one takes from a story is each his own...

I agree, I after a book finishes, like with the phantom, that he ends up doing something bigger and better, and getting satisfaction from it. Or if you read Memoris of a Geisha I sense tha Sayuri has finally come to terms that what she does restricts her and she raises her child (for she ends up with one the the epilog when shes older) to the best of her ability and she lives happily somewhere new.
