Description Pinkie just came to me, she told me that Cave Johnson wants to test their new Aperture Science Handheld Portal Device. Apparently, she applies as a test subject, and now she asks me for help in testing her ASHPD on Twilight, for which she'll be paid 60 bits. It will be split though, 30 - 30 Good thing she didn't get the Combustible Lemon Launcher

Well, I've been mentioning that I'll be running more practice, test animations before I even dare try a more complex one right? Well here is one of them, and like the Starcraft ones, I will make a few of these "Thinking with Portals" animation each with different characters (I'll still be continuing the Starcraft ones though!). It was quite a shock due to the transition from expressions only to full body motion, and gotta be honest, ain't too happy with this

So here it is, the first full motion test animation with Pinkie and Twilight as the highlight. Silent Movie? Sorry, I don't have any talent in voice acting

Next "thinking with portals" would be Derpy and her delivery service.

Speaking of which, Feedback and/or critique is most welcome. And please don't hold back, if you think I deserve some scolding and constructive criticism, go hard on me.

Ideas are most welcome please!

Oh, and I would like to thank you specifically to who has given me tips back there on how to animate, really helpful especially the one about nested symbols (specifically the head) Oh, and of course to all of you who have kindly gave their support and motivation Absolutely Posolutely Definitely Positively Thank you!

I loved this! The animation was great and show like.
The idea was clever and the plot of it was great.
I loved it when Pinkie fell on Twilight instead of throwing the book.
Pinkie was a great use of character to be using a potal gun. It just seems so like Pinkie to be doing something as random as that.
I found this funny and enjoyable and I couldn't see what was wrong with it. Of course, I'm no expert at spotting issues but this was great never-the-less.
I'm going to add you too my watch list and hope that you keep making great animations!

I friggin' LOVE this. This is a very funny, Very cute, very well animated, very well drawn, very original and very well thought-out flash animation. I thought it was funny because I can easily picture Pinkie Pie doing this sort of thing if she ever came across a portal gun. Plus Twilight Sparkle's reaction at the end was just CLASSIC. e.deviantart.net/emoticons/b/b… " width="15" height="15" alt="" title=" (Big Grin)"/> And the use of sound effects was both very clever and very appropriate.

I just love your flash animations. They're really awesome and I hope to see more of them. As always, keep up the good work!

~Sincerely, srbarker.

omg yes yes yes yes YEEEEEEEEEES OMG so funny. This is hysterical. I love Pinkie with portals. I've watched all your videos and they are SO funny. Also -- I could never EVER have the patience for doing animation but THIS, this is top notch. Except for where the ponies look sort of fat. I also love it in the Rainbow Dash one where Twilight Sparkle breaks the screen. Love it. You. Are. Funny. Great job! Well that's it but i've got 20 more words to type so o o o o o o o o o o o o yay! meep
wish I could give this 20 impact stars!!

I would like to start off that this was really hilarious e.deviantart.net/emoticons/x/x… " width="15" height="15" alt="" title="XD"/>

The impact of it is perfect and it really makes you laugh hard (at least for me) and it's basically something Pinkie Pie would do e.deviantart.net/emoticons/x/x… " width="15" height="15" alt="" title="XD"/>

The technique for everything but especially the facial expressions and actions done are right on the spot.

For originality, I have seen quite a few of these in various places but it is still nice and the different use of the portal gun made it unique.

For vision, it obviously has a great / funny theme and the idea you had for this little clip was interesting but not to the point of pure genius.

Not sure where this little error goes and I'm sure someone else mentioned it but the book she tosses away makes no sound and therefore doesn't even alert Twilight since it didn't make a sound, but then again what do we know if we cant see it. It could've landed outside or on something soft but nonetheless, I really loved this.

I think that this was a very funny, thoughtful, sweet little animation for Twilight and Pinkie. I like that the graphics were good, that the ponies looked the same as they did on the show, and the little joke at the end. I really think this deserves to go onto the front page. The animation was clear and solid, and you didn't try to just rush through the whole thing. I, myself, being a brony, thought this was EPIC SAUCE. Brohoof to the world and all bronies! I watched both of the "Thinking with Portals" videos, and they are funny, sweet, and EPIC.

Well, it would seem every morally questionable lunatic qualifies as a test subject for Mr Cave Johnson, as long as he/she doesn't mind getting their blood turned into gasoline.
And I'm pretty sure I heart the generic hit cat sound, the one that I just love to hear!
You enVISIONed everything very nicely, and executed it with great skill. Proud to be a brony with you!
Well, we've all seen Portal ponies before, but it is still a vast domain that hasn't been explored, including the animation ones, so it's not perfect on originality. good thing we all love Portal ponies.
Your technique is perfect. Nothing less. Amazingly synchronized, the sounds complete the fluid and cursive animation perfectly.
The impact can be nothing less than maximum, the appreciation for Pinkie and portals raising it to an perfect height. Pinkie gives a chance to all artists to express their randomness and have fun, so I encourage everyone to warm up to her and play with her!
Overall, the muffin tastes like water to the gold-encrusted crow. That is all.

This was hilarious! I laughed out loud, thank you for that, and that is why you get five stars on Impact.

While the animation was good, the ponies looked kinda fat and/or squishy. That's the only real negative thing I picked up. The background was done pretty good, I think, and Like I said, it made me laugh ^-^

I especially like how you captured Pinkies Personality in this one. She's like "I'mma throw the book at her... Nah... Weeeee!"
Also I liked Twilights facial expressions. The "PIIIINKIIIEE!!" would have fit better at the end when they are falling in my opinion, it was funny nonetheless.

Great work, will keep an eye out for more.

This is incredibly silly, because of an ultimate sense of humour e.deviantart.net/emoticons/x/x… " width="15" height="15" alt="" title="XD"/>

I haven't played any Portal games before, but I've seen the pictures and stuff based on them. Some of the bronies are addicted to Portal and the others are obsessed with anything else e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/s… " width="15" height="15" alt="" title=" (Smile)"/>

Pinkie Pie is completely funny and does crazy stuff like acting as a comedian. Twilight Sparkle doesn't know how items that make portals come from; they are summoned from the different dimension probably.

I love how you made a flash animation. It was really cute, due to some cheeky and/or naughty mishaps (or pranks) Pinkie Pie made e.deviantart.net/emoticons/h/h… " width="15" height="13" alt="" title="Heart"/>

First of all I want to mention that I REALLY enjoyed this one, I mean I love Pinkie Pie and I love Portal, a perfect combination. But not for the little bits and pieces I want to point out in my critique.

The animation was very well done, you are definately on the right track there, it was smooth and the characters had great expressions, I especially enjoyed the fluid movements. One of my few concerns though is that it all became a little anti-climax when Pinkie decided to not throw the book in, because her expression, which was by no means bad, I just think you used the wrong one, didnΒ΄t really show what she was thinking about. She didnΒ΄t look quite as "playful" as IΒ΄d guess Pinkie to be as she planned on suprising her friend.
It was only just as she jumped we got to know what her intention was and it was just a liiittle too late for us to form a reaction to it before it was over. A smug on her face before the jump would have carried the joke over with much greater effect.

Apart from that minor detail, this is a great flash! And I still chuckled, my point is just that the chuckle might have been a laugh instead. I dont know how new you are to animating, but I really hope you continue, we learn all the time as the saying goes, canΒ΄t wait for your next animated piece :3

Thank you for the critique
Well you asked me whether I'm new or not to animating. To be honest, I've been animating for 6 years for hobby although I only entered "growth spurt" (that is, sharp improvement in ability to animate) 2.5 years ago; which makes the mistake a bit more jarring than supposed to be. So presentation is a bit problematic? Will fix on that.

Once again, thank you so much for taking your time to write the critique, will improve!

Very Pinkie Pie. Very well done e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/s… " width="15" height="15" alt="" title=" (Smile)"/> I particularly like how you handle facial expressions... the timing is a little different than that of the show, but I like how yours works out.

Most of what I would change involves distraction. By that, I mean that the viewer's eye is led to one part of the screen and thus other action important to the story is missed. What I mean by this:

When Twilight first appears with her book, people will be looking at the book to see if they can read the title (an Easter Egg hunt). Because of that, Pinkie's initial appearance to the left can be missed altogether, or only picked up afterward. Two suggestions: first, have Twilight pause for a second or so (eyes move to indicate reading), allowing the viewer to see the book title. Second, have Pinkie in the background show up at the end of the "allocated reading period", make some looking-side-to-side motions to attract the viewer's eye, then have her heft the portal gun up. Pause long enough to let the viewer identify what she has, then Pinkie fires the gun.

Other notes:

1. Missing sound effect when Pinkie discards the book she was going to drop on Twilight. There should be a "thump" when it goes offscreen.

2. Missed opportunity for another Easter Egg. Pinkie's book title could be something like "Pranking with Gravity" or "Minor Skull Injuries" or "Wormholes for Foals"

3. When Twilight leans in from the left while looking around for the source of the second portal-noise, I would suggest a shrug before she withdraws.

4. Have the collision between Twilight and Pinkie knock the large book on the right off of the lectern. It's a visually prominent object; give it a role to play.

5. After the clatter-sound ends but before the "Pinkie!" yell at the end, a little dust or smoke rising from the hole would make a nice bit of visual punctuation. If you want to be artsy, start the appearance of the smoke just before the fade-out, but leave the smoke at full brightness until the rest of the screen is black... then fade the smoke as well.

6. The silence between the end of the clattering and the "Pinkie!" yell is too long. If there were credits or something else happening on-screen, the gap would be fine. As it is, the timing is a little off.

Minor quibbles. I very much like what you're doing here!

First, I'd like to say that I'm very excited to see you venturing into the world of animated shorts! I enjoyed your StarCraft ponies immensely (in spite of the fact that I've never actually played StarCraft), and it's good to see you challenging yourself with full animations.

One thing that bothered me particularly was how two-dimensional Pinkie and her ASHPD appeared in the beginning. At some points it looked like she was swinging around a cardboard cut-out. Though it would take you a lot longer to do, I think you'd have a better final product if you animated the ASHPD with more frames of different angles, instead of trying to manipulate that one picture. This would definitely remedy the flat-ness.

Towards the end of the cartoon (when we're seeing Pinkie viewed from the side) Pinkie's legs seem unnecessarily stiff, particularly coming out of her jump (which is odd because I think you animated Twilight's walk cycle very well). I would've expected her knees to bend to help absorb the impact. I'm also not sure what she was intending to do with that book before she chucked it away.

A nit-picky thing that bothered me was when Pinkie eventually decided to jump into the portal. Her expression looked like one of confusion, not the "oh look it's my best friend Twilight and I'm going to surprise her now" expression I would've expected. It also seemed odd that the library's floor was so thin and weak. It may just be my own head-canon talking, but since the library is carved out of a tree I always imaged the floor to be very strong, very thick wood. But since the climax of the gag relies on the floor being thin, I can let it slide.

Lastly, while I'm sure you and I are both big fans of Portal, I feel like the "Ponies and Portal" genre has been played out. You've been really unique and creative with a lot of your other stuff and I'd like to see more of that.

I realize I've written a lot of critiques here, but please understand that the very last thing I want to do is discourage you. You have a lot of potential as an animator, and I want to help you to constantly improve and perfect. Whatever you do, DON'T STOP ANIMATING!

Best of luck in your future endeavors!

-Chessie

Thank you for the honest critique
Hmmm... So I guess the book part didn't really got its part is it? I was deliberately trying to mislead people actually in order to bring the surprise; Many portal pranks that I have seen (youtube videos) relies on objects being thrown into one end of the portal before dropping on the unsuspecting victim. Here, I try to make Pinkie to seem to be about to drop a book on Twilight; which is where the twist supposed to kick in. Her looks of confusion is supposed to be that of the "wait a minute, this is not enough carnage" type before - in a snap - changes her mind and then decided to drop herself on Twilight. Seems like I need to improve more on the delivery

Now as for the other part, I have to admit I didn't put too much effort on adding more angles to some parts of the animation, most importantly the ASHPD.

Once again, I have to thank you for the kind critique. I intend this as practice before I can move on to the larger projects, and to know in advance where I did wrong is very helpful

Well hi there, it isn't too much to say about this, but here goes:

Since the other little interactive animations you did before about MLP and where you put in the description that it were for practising before doing animations like this...this is much better than what I expected indeed

Well, but it was like a lot obvious what would she do, I recognise it, but that doesn't mean that t wasn't good. In fact, it was nice, I liked your definitive style of drawing, and animation (well actually its the same you did all this time, right?)

I hope to seeing not only drawings, but animations like this from you in the devWATCH messenges e.deviantart.net/emoticons/w/w… " width="15" height="15" alt="" title=" (Wink)"/>
