hot pot

My dream of America
is like dà bính lòuh
with people of all persuasions and tastes
sitting sown around a common pot
chopsticks and basket scoops here and there
some cooling squid and others beef
some tofu or watercress
all in one broth
like a stew that really isn't
as each one chooses what he wishes to eat
only that the pot and fire are shared
along with the good company
and the sweet soup
spooned out at the end of the meal.

At long last, my hot pot child...! To me, hot pot is the epitome of a winter meal. I love gathering around a shared pot of broth with my friends or with my family, whether it's at a tasty all you can eat restaurant (give me those fish egg filled balls and all of the lamb!) or just in my home with a more limited, but still delicious stock of ingredients. Everyone is being warmed by proximity to the pot, blinded by the steam rising from it, and filled up by the piles of food before us. I picked this kind of hot pot in particular because it reminds me of sharing - I can't get enough of the spicy broth, but my grandmother is only willing to eat from the mild side. Like this, everyone gets to enjoy what they want, and I think that's the truly magical part of hot pot!

In retrospect, the sketch I picked to render wasn't really conducive to showing their nature features, which were a key part of their concept, so I included a few extra reference sketches as a bonus! They have a spicy side and a mild side, with nature features related to the ingredients included in each broth - and their eyes (which are, of course, hidden by their gloriously thick fur) each match the color of the opposite side.

I had a ton of fun rendering this esk (even with an extremely critical last minute snafu, haha), and I'm really hoping you all enjoy them just as much as I enjoy this meal!

Esk are a closed species created and owned by witherlings !
