Description (Edit: Added the color AND words! Hey, wanna see this in color without words, as well as two bonus Marias based on Gundams as helped along with by ? Didn't think so, but they're at sta.sh/2h6ai1dgfu7?edit=1 anyway.)

Because it is an unfortunate rule of beat-em-up villains that no matter how many enemy types there are, SOMEONE has to be the "Galsia". Hi there, Maria Kenney.

Anyway.

MARIA
A relatively nice young lady who nonetheless always seems to find her way to the least fitting friends possible, she may not be particularly good at what she does but it's not gonna stop her from working hard and working often to try to give you a nice punch upside the head. It does make you wonder how or why it is that she's always ready for another go after you've just beaten her down, over and over...

Fighting style:
--Maria normally has exactly two moves - a weak jab, and a slightly more powerful haymaker straight that she only uses after she's connected with two jabs, which will knock the player down if she connects.
--Very occasionally, she can have additional moves, with the likelihood of her possessing either going up via her power level (which varies between her palette-swaps and game progression):
A) A front-kick that has a slightly longer start-up time than the jab, but that causes minor stunning, and combos immediately into the haymaker straight if it connects.
B) A flying kick that has a short start-up time, and a slight cooldown when she lands, during which she's completely vulnerable. The player will be knocked down if she connects.
--If Maria has extra move B, she ALWAYS possesses extra move A as well.

Palette-swaps:
--Rose
--Sakura
--Garcia
--Meg
--Mattie
--Shauna
--Watanabe
--Redfield
--Rockwell
--Hyatt

I... realise I have failed to inquire prior. What exactly |is| this game? It seems somewhat challenging so far, especially if the most basic "Mooks" are capable of laying down guaranteed knockdowns on a third hit. I suppose it depends how much you can do on the ground as part of the combat system. Mind you, beatemups are not my area of expertise; it might be that the third hit almost never happens.

It amuses me that Ms Regina Redshirt is more of a danger than the baseline...

YukaTakeuchiFan In reply to AmorousAce [2019-10-19 02:27:41 +0000 UTC]

Well, the general idea is "beat-em-up" - Nancy stars, of course :3 - but honestly, they could work in just about any game if you adjusted their skill sets appropriately.

But yeah, the idea's more that typically, in older-school beat-em-ups, enemies stop being able to hit you upon knockdown, so the third hit's more a combo ender than anything else... but it also gives you two hits within which to use a special move to break out before you take additional damage.

Though, fun fact, "Vendetta" / "Crime Fighters 2" let YOU attack while YOU were on the ground, as long as you were on your back, as a way to clear some space; letting the player do that is SUPER uncommon in the genre. (When enemies have it, it's usually just a means to stop you from immediately catching them in a combo as soon as they get up.)

And yeah, if you notice, the entire set of Marias has a joke in their name somewhere - some more subtle than others - regarding 'redshirts' or other things known mostly for dying or being terrible at fighting ;3

Also, the whole series is kind of an exercise in allowing me to just have fun drawing rando character archetypes or enemy styles without having to fret too much about finding immediate use for them; in this case, it's "lowest-tier mook in any given game" :3

Ah, no problem! I like to do a little bit extra to make characters interesting besides the obvious, which evidently includes the backgrounders despite all attempts otherwise. ;3

I'll spell out the references:

Maria Kenney - Hoo, this is the big one that's not really. "Maria" is more a joke relating to the hentai series Blue Eyes, which I have a... storied... history regarding (you'll probably notice with several of these that the very first character doesn't always match the naming theme I have going through the rest of their ilk) - you'll also notice Risa, Cecilia and Claire, and one of the Ryuko palette-swaps is named "Sarah" (Hell, "Ryuko" is basically Female Tatsuya - note how both names have a phrase for 'dragon' out in front?) - but the actual joke? Her surname is a slight re-spelling of "Kenny", from South Park, the kid known mostly for dying repeatedly in the early seasons.

Rose MacReady - Roses are red, so's a low-level mook's shirt :3

Sakura Kimishima - Sakura is the name of the main male character from Dokuro-chan. Sakura dies often at the other characters' hands, typically its title character.

Inez Garcia - The low-level mook from Streets of Rage 2, who I reference in the description - though in 2, he was misspelled as "Galsia" in the Japanese version and it stuck during translation. It's actually fixed up for Streets of Rage 3 (American release, anyway), and I think they got it right in the Japanese version's manual for 1, but I don't remember personally.

Meg Mariani - Name swipe of the same character from Family Guy (hey, I liked the first few seasons), who went full-on butt-monkey as the series progressed.

Matilda "Mattie" Blake - Feminized version of 'Matt', the character from Death Note. Put bluntly, Matt loses a game of Live-Action Lethal Enforcers. Badly.

Shauna Reiser - Bit of a twofer. "Shauna" is a feminized version of "Shaun", which is respelling of "Sean", for "Sean Bean" - the guy who dies a lot in things he's in. Her surname comes from a Contra reference: the main characters are "Lance Bean" and "Bill Rizer", with "Rizer" being a misspelling of "Reiser", AKA Paul Reiser. (Their names are a total of four references to "Aliens" actors, so I figured I'd use the one that her first name didn't have covered ;3)

Hakufu Watanabe - Watanabe is the name of a character in "Live A Live", an SNES RPG that never left Japan but HAS been fan-translated - and it's a running gag that one guy/thing with his name, or any name similar to it, dies pretty soon after he shows up, in every chapter of the game. "Hakufu" I just yoinked from Mark's comment above, because why not? :U

Regina Redfield - Pretty obvious, this one, don'tcha think? (Something stuck out to me regarding her palette, and I ended up promoting her from a mook to a full character - you've seen the result :3) ;3

Tabitha Rockwell - Sam Rockwell plays "Guy Fleegman" in "Galaxy Quest", whose claim to fame is having a bit part as a redshirt in one episode of the in-universe show - a small role, but one he's clearly proud of. He ends up taking part in the movie's plot, constantly panicking that he's going to die horribly at every turn, assuming he's not going to do any better in real life.

Hyatt Rial - Hyatt is from Excel Saga. Hyatt dies a lot, often in very silly ways. "Rial" is the surname of her English VA, Monica Rial. (Similarly, I ended up digging her palette, so I did the mook-to-character thing here, too :3)

And yeah, Nancy is kind of a super-badass in the cast who only gets more so over time, and she's very much my main female character. Her problem is that she doesn't actually star in a shonen series so her attitude gets her into a fair bit of trouble and makes some things she wants to do harder. Still, that doesn't mean her skills don't get their time to shine, it just means that I flipped a few anime tropes to see what I could get out of things regarding harem series, love stories and such. ;3

That is... very thorough, and much appreciated! Thank you! I think I understood less of the references than I thought I had, haha.

Hm, so it's Elliot's harem anime, Nancy's beat-em-up, Misty's interpersonal family drama sitcom...? All at once? Or have I perhaps crossed wires intended left uncrossed...

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

YukaTakeuchiFan In reply to AmorousAce [2019-11-01 01:06:55 +0000 UTC]

It's cool, sometimes I get indirect and esoteric on purpose :3 And it's more a universe where a lot of stories can take place at once. ;3

And it's actually not much of a 'harem' given that Elliot's trying NOT to do that sort of thing because he doesn't think it's fair to anyone. Still, girls think he's cute, SOMEONE has to be in the questionable commissions, and with Nancy being the perv she is, things get silly~ :3

AmorousAce In reply to YukaTakeuchiFan [2019-11-01 02:50:20 +0000 UTC]

Your characters are splendid, I must say. I have a lot of respect for Elliot, I must say. He's trying his best not to play his role, and he does it engagingly!

(And Anji is a... spy? A spy/professional bunnygirl/supremely-endowed-self-insert-and-only-secretly-happy-about-it/notorious carrot thief?)

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

YukaTakeuchiFan In reply to AmorousAce [2019-11-02 18:39:21 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, part of Elliot's current design was based around the idea of "what makes a harem lead and how could I make it fairly plausible from the word go" :3

(Also, Anji's just a bunny of silly origin who kind of enjoys her silly situation and transformation (she's only really secretive about it because explaining it is a pain in the ass), and sees a lot of potential with it. And for fun, she retains a lot of my personality traits, both positive AND negative; watch out, anime baddies >:3)

Personally, I like to think that they hire one guy, scan through alternate gaming universes for the same guy (weirdly enough they all seem to have different color schemes), then get to clonin' everyone a few dozen times =3

...it's a genre where you eat Trash Chicken through your skin in a split-second to GAIN health. Sense has long since left the building.

There have been many potential explanations and the one I like most is that they basically cloned Maria a bunch of times, then cloned the clones :3

I know a few.

1) Stop referring to the Marias as "Red Dresses", "Cannon Fodder", the "Deadmeat Brigade", or similar titles. It is negatively affecting their morale.

2) Our organization's motto is "Evil for a better tomorrow, as long as you're evil", not "Maria, you go first".

3) The testing procedure for new equipment is not to immediately hand it to Maria, then run for cover.
3a) Mooks attempting to videotape footage of any Maria-based testing will be reprimanded further.
3b) Mooks posting footage of Maria-based testing to social media sites will be assigned to "Boss Punching Bag" duty for a week.
