Description

SO. Because I got quite a few comments telling me how dumb I am for not thinking that Kojima's design was the best thing ever done, let me update my comment. The original one will be down at the bottom, unedited.

The original design on the left is a lazy, sexist and boring design job, and every possible explanation that was given for it (after I did this) is major bullshit.
Kojima was in all probability going for a controversial character, and later announcement that would have people talking about his new game. And of course it worked. I deeply regret that an apparent otherwise great game developer did such a poor job on an otherwise good character.

This is a fictional. Naked. Lady. For anybody telling me or themselves that something else than MASSIVE FANSERVICE is the reason for her nakedness, you are lying to yourselves and you know it. I mean, she even has figurines with soft bouncing boobs you can fondle, how great is that?

If such a weird condition exists (woohoo, that parasite can somehow detect her speaking English and make her self-destruct? That's quite high-tech) in that world, there would have been ways to be safe and covered anyway. Be it new types of fabric (I mean, we've already invented swimsuits that mimic sharkskin, invented self-cooling fabric, found out how to keep humans alive in space or even make them invisible) or just using already existing methods (light fabric? large clothes? NOT VACUUM-SEALED CATSUITS?)
He might have as well been honest and put her out there naked, if being covered put her in deadly danger of suffocating or being discovered.

tl;dr : This is a BORING, LAZY and SEXIST piece of shit design done for fanservice and merchandising purposes destined to 15 year old boys.

Original comment :
Left is the original character design "Quiet" by Hideo Kojima, right is my redesign. So, a while back I stumbled over the character Quiet from Metal Gear V.  The first time I saw her and the whole story about Kojima trying to justify his design with ever shittier arguments, I just got really really sad. Sad and angry actually. I think I can say without bragging too much that even with my lack of knowledge concerning army stuff and outfits, I did a better job than Kojima on this one. This can’t even be considered a redraw. It’s like starting a dress-up game from scratch.

Word to that! All I can ask these people is: OK, which one of those women would you trust your life with? Given a choice between a guy in full combat gear and a guy with a bare upperbody and tight shorts, which one would be best suited for the task as a soldier? Not a hard question to ask, and that's exactly what I wish game developers would concider in the design process.

Oh my go yes, I wish they would.
I stopped counting how many crappy female character designs I see everyday a long time ago, but still sigh every time.

Yes, it seems they keep popping up at least once a day. I'm going to make a web design/design blog (I'm a web design student) that brings up just that issue -- I've also noticed how my own education is saturated with values I didn't expect. I one of the classes the assignment was to make the image of a 12-year old girl looking flawless. Why not make it a young guy look old, or something more challenging (and less sexist!)
I think it's time to bring up this issue.

We're drowning in a society where casual racism and sexism is found everywhere, most people don't even notice it or find it totally normal.
There already are a few websites/blogs around that try to bring this issue to light; just a few examples could be Eschergirls or Repair-her-armor on tumblr.
Wow. That's  really boring and unoriginal assignment.

In total agreement! You took the words right out of my mouth! I've also noticed how the racial and sexistic remarks have just somehow become the norm, wtf happened while I was growing up?! How hard is it to treat people with respect and kindness???
Thank you for the heads up on Eschergirls and Repair-her-armor on tumblr, a real treasure trove I didn't know existed.
Yes, I refused to do the assignment and didn't need to anyway, since I know Photoshop like the back of my hand anyway, but it made me wonder why on earth a teacher would make such an assignment in the first place.

Why not?

Well, Kojimas outfit is definitely exaggerated, but i think yours looks more for colder climate. While the left Quiet gets extreme sunburn, yours is going to melt in the sun. Also the outfit should be more brown, because there aint no green spots in the desert to hide in. Easy target!

Yup, you're quiet right about the colours.
But just look at any possible outfit worn by people living in deserts, Touaregs for example, who understood that exposing your skin to sand & sun was a very bad idea, and that nights are quite cooler (even if the legend about nights being icy cold are fake).
Moreover, I've shown her wearing all her gear, but I suppose she's a grown woman able to recognize when to take off her jacket or not.

It should be a BIT lighter, yeah. Your link showed me the VW Touareg, nice car! Didn't thought about the cold nights, but you seem to be right. If anyone can do a better outfit, do it. Im honest, i can't. Good work!

Haha damn, I managed to mess my link up somehow.
Anyway, I'll never claim my design to be the best, far from it. I'm just saying it's better than Kojima's.

Two things:

One: Fanservice. I may be more tolerant of fanservice and supportive of Kojima, but yeah, not defending that. It's fanservice, pure and simple, because that's what Kojima does.

Two: Like the Beauty and the Beast Unit, she's meant to be a visual contrast between how she normally looks and how she got there (namely, being set on fire-twice-and then infested with a symbiotic parasite that's made it actually life-threatening for her to wear a decent outfit) that makes you internally question if you're reveling in someone's crippling injuries.

But yeah, the point would have probably been less controversial and skeevy all around if Quiet was wearing bandages/organic-ish armor instead. Would probably make her look cooler too.

Yes, at the time I did this thing, I (and everyone else) wasn't aware of her tragic oh-so-realistic backstory. Because Kojima was rolling in the drama he was creating and loving it.
But even after getting to know it, nobody'll convince me that what they did was give her the most practical clothing option they could giver her.
I mean, we already managed to invent sharkskin-like swimsuits, invisible capes, and space-proof clothing; don't tell me that in a world where symbiotic english-understanding parasites live, they don't know how to wave breathable large and light clothing for her to wear. Was her only other clothing option a vacuum-sealed faux-leather catsuit?

I appreciate a bit of fanservice here and there like any other person out there, but a walking literally non-talking pair of female boobs in a fishnets and unpractical bra is probably part of the worst I've seen for now.

And she would have looked so much cooler in something else, now she just looks like a joke and fapping material.

A waaaaaay better job! The original is, no offense to the artist, ridiculous. Impractical. Unrelaistic. And objectifying. And incredibly sexist. Your version is so much better, actually realistic and empowering. thanks for this.
