Celestia and Luna are not so effective fighters (we can see it numerous times -.-). They are just guardians. And losing one of their best friend is giving them much pain.
Celestia expecialy mourns Twilight and can't bring herself to hurt Midnight, because... somewhere she understands him.

Ah I see. The Princesses exalted themselves so Midnight can't harness their power. That leaves Cadence and Flurry Heart. I guess that means he absorbed Twilight's powers too.
