this tutorial is for the darari obi that a maiko wears.hope that you find it useful... and this image is super huge.... dont say that i didnt warn you
if you want to give me tips thats fine, i'm still learning too =]
also, this was done on my sister, and she doesnt fit any of my kimono, hence why I'm tying it over her t-shirt and jeans.... cant expect meto tie the obi on myself, and take pictures can u?

A bit of a late reply, but better late than never right? It's near impossible to get ahold of a darari obi short of making it yourself, but that doesn't mean it's impossible with a fukuro or maru obi. You won't get the same dramatic length on the tails of the obi, but it's very possible. The longer the obi, the better, though.

Hey,
I'm afraid I'm asking a stupid question, but where is the tutorial actually?
I've been searching for such a long time for a useful tutorial, but didn't find any. Now everybody here seems to find this tutorial so useful, so I guess, it must be very good.
But... am I blind? Where is a link? Where are the pictures and descriptions? No matter where I click, I don't find the actual tutorial.

oh wow great! i've looked so long for a darari tutorial! i watched videos where maikos were dressed but it was way too fast! i guess this will help, thanks a lot

oh ; one more thing; is it possible for this knot to " tie in the front move to the back " ?

(whispers) yush: I've used this tutorial a lot for my own kimonos and I tie the knot in the front and move it back. The kimono will move a bit along with it, but redress yourself afterwards and voila: you're one fine looking maiko ^_^; just give it a few random tries, and you'll get better in it. By now I can do it without gazing at this tutorial ^^

sure! I burned the crraaaaaap out of my hands the other day putting a casserole in the oven, but I think over the holidays I'm going to put on my kitsuke again for a few pictures once my hands get better!!!

It doesn't matter who responds to this,but could you use a Chuya obi(or a good sized Nagoya obi?) to do this also?
I found one that's very close to the length of a Maru obi and looks like it could be tied into a darari obi.

I'm a re-enactor and my persona is a senior maiko. I really appreciate this tutorial and will soon tell you how well it worked. My only question before I start is how long soes the fabric need to be and does it come off of a standard bolt, a shorter bolt or do you have to cut the width at all.

yay!!!!! i finally got a maru obi from ebay and tied it in darari style-along with the "taiko drum" style which is super hard all by ure self!!! but my sis was the test subject for the darari style, like you lol, i tried like 4 times till i got close enough, i thank you so much!!!!!!!!!!!!!! *angelic singing* You are amazing. Thank you. I bought an entire WWII era furisode, but I could never find a tutorial that would explain how to tie a darari or hanhaba. So I had been dressing up as a maiko with a taiko tie. ;_; I felt like a sinner slaughter the geisha world like that.
But thanks to you, I will now be able to dress full out like a maiko. Yayyy!

This is great, but I have a few questions for you. What width is your obi, and would it work for a narrower obi? And my other question is there any way you could make this into a little more printer friendly version?

my obi is 30 cm wide. Most obis are on average that size as well. Normally, you are supposed to fold the obi into 3/4 when you wear it, but if you want to have the wide maiko effect, just leave it unfolded when you're tying it. I can get around to making it printer frienly, but i'm a pretty busy girl

wow thats really cool, how did you learn to do that? also whats your obi made from? its gorgeous! I did my friends hair in the katsuyama maiko hairstyle the other night, good god, it was freggin hard! but it turned out fabulous!

lots and lots of practice!!! My obi was made from a type of silk. lots of repeating patterns lol. It also has a layer of the thickest interfacing I could find.

I have been searching all over the internet for how to tie this kind of obi, I'm going to be doing a Kabuki performance later on during the school year, so I reallt needed to know this, I know how to tie just a simple one, but not a Darari... I'm getting my Kimono and my obi soon so then I can practice, once again thank you

lol, good luck with your performance!
I suggest trying to teach other people how to tie it too, especially if you need to be wearing the obi yourself. its really hard to tie when you're all alone

but this obi i made, and its made like a maru obi is
