This is not an AU, but based on a different timeline in game xD
I'm still confuse whether or not Sans assumed the throne in one of the neutral endings.
I'd like to think that he did, but doing so would bring him to a spiraling downfall with all the responsibilities that has fallen onto his shoulders.
He's not ready for it, but he has no choice. He has to live on but...
He's hopeless, everyone else is hopeless. It's just too sad.
Ahhhh!! But I made him look like he's going to tear down anyone who would be in the way sooo yeah...

It's an awesome idea, but i don't see Sans as the kind of guy that'd take up the throne. definitely capable, sure (I mean come on, he's super smart, and will kick your murder-y butt any day of the week), but I think it's just not something he'd want to do. Just kinda help out at most, like he did in Papyrus's ending.
But I really love seeing people's interpretations of king Sans anyway. He always looks SO COOL

If we're talking canon Sans, maybe he wouldn't... but sometimes traumatic experiences or losing someone you dearly loved can possibly change a person to do something to redeem themselves. He did regret "taking it easy" since the ending is "exactly what he got". He lost Papyrus, he lost his friends, what else has to got to lose after literally losing almost everything he had cared for?
I'm sure he wouldn't want to be a king but could he afford everyone in the underground to just die? Who knows hehe.

I like everything in it : the colors, the lights, the crown, the cape, his expression... okay well, especially his expression, I must confess : he seems so determined ! (And it hurts a little when you think about what he has gone through)
My heart also sinks when I look at the cape, I really don't like the Genocide Route : their death are such a waste.
I have read some comments, and I agree with you : Sans IS capable to be a king, he has the brain and the capacity for that. He just don't like being on the front stage, except to tell jokes.
Anyway, can someone explain to me why the heck did I have to go through almost 3400 deviations to find this little wonder ?? -_- (And I have absolutely no regrets xD)
PS : I can easily read english, but I struggle to speak/write it, so I'm so sorry if some mistakes hurt your eyes :/ (I'm trying to be careful ><)

The determined expression is solely for aesthetics. He would make one badass of a king imho. But yeah, canon-wise... for sure, he'll just hide his fear ans insecurities behind his smile.
Believe me I say, geno route was definitely heart aching. I cried for most of the characters I grew to love. The boss battles were interesting but sad.
I imagine King Sans to appear lazy... but work so hard behind the scenes like how he is in game. He reminds me of one character like that but I just cant remember who lol.
Also, it's crazy you went through 3400 deviations xD but I'm sure there are other cool fanarts out there in that 3.4k artworks hehe.

In my opinion, the genocide route is necessary if you want to understand who really is Sans, how he feels. I've discovered Undertale thanks to two let's play (but I'm going to buy it now ), and as soon as I saw him, I immediately thought "Hey, that guy is pretty cool and funny, I think I like him !", but that's all. He was my favorite character with Papyrus, but nothing more since you don't really see him, exept during his funny times. But when I watched the genocide route, it was an all other story xD It was at this moment I understood that Sans was not only a funny little skeleton only used for funny moments, but a more complex and deeper character. Maybe we can say he is a tragic character ? Anyway, when the youtuber had to fight him, we were both "noooooo whyyyyy ! Not Sans pleaaase !" (fortunately, it was only me and my computer xD).
Maybe killing everyone is funny for some people, after all they are "just pixels in a game" (I hate myself for saying that even if it's the truth...), but I think it's a shame if it's the only motivation. And at the same time, it's a shame to not do it, since you miss a lot (heartbreaking) moments and events. You also miss a hell of a badass fight against Sans, just sayin'
Sans is THE example that you should never trust the apparences xD (he smiles while he is depressed, he is shown kind, lazy and funny while he can be veeeery dangerous)
Oh I've found a lot of cool fanarts (thankfully ! It would have been a shame otherwise ! xD), but yours caught my eyes immediately, like a bottle of ketchup at Grillby's ! (sorry for this lame comparaison xD)

Yeah, you don't really know Sans to the core that much through Pasifist/True Pacifist. He is a comedian, yes, but there's always the other side that is being covered up by those humors. I was on the same boat as you thinking he was cool and all but he didn't really have enough screen time. If you don't do geno, you'll definitely miss a whole lot of content and/or character situations that are unique to that route.
Characters like Sans are interesting and it makes them more believable.

That said, Sans does not assume the role of the leader in any of the endings. If you kill all of the available leaders during a route (ignoring genocide), either the Underworld falls into despair with no leader (you killed a non-boss monster) or the small white dog ascends to the throne (you didn't kill any non-bosses). Sans does not assume the throne because he's "not cut out for something like that and likes to take it easy".

I believe the leaderless ending is however you interpret it. Sans is the type of character who doesn’t outright lie to you but doesn’t necessarily tells the truth either. Just like how he never told Toriel that you killed Papyrus in the Exiled Queen ending. He is also the “brains” behind the scene when Papyrus assumes the throne. Sans is capable of being one, but he wouldn’t be open about it in public imo.
