Description
Two species of monkey arrived onto the northern potato plains. The northern runkey and one from another lineage that split off before runkeys, the tubers.
Having split off before the runkeys, they had less cursorial adaptations and are also less social. They usually tolerate each other, but flee when seeing other monkeys not of the same species. The reason for this is because runkeys actually take advantage of the tuber's adaptions, which include sharper "claws". Tubers evolved these claws as a result because they were not able to compete with the territorial runkeys. Right after the split they still looked quite similar, but now the difference between them is quite big. As the name suggests, tubers eat, of course, tubers of the potato plants. They dig up the entire plant in order to eat the nutritious tubers. They usually target plants that have been somewhat eaten by runkeys, often entire patches of vegetation. If left alone, the potatoes will regenerate their lost leaves and survive. But if a tuber spots a patch like this, it digs up those specifically, as to leave more resources to the runkeys so they do not disturb them. But, in occasion that a clan of runkeys spots a tuber, they will try to gang up on it, as to try to get it to dig up tubers for them. Runkeys actually quite enjoy tubers, but they just have no way of getting ahold of them normally. When the clan charges, it all depends on what the tuber will do from here on. If the tuber turns tail and runs, it will be swiftly caught by the runkeys, as the heavier build of the tuber is much slowly than the swift runkey. If the tuber tries to stand its ground, the runkeys actually will not take action because either know they cannot actually defeat a tuber on a one on one fight, and they would rather just fall back than actually engage, because either know they will not get much benefit if they actually kill the tuber. The tuber's sharp claws could also potentially fatally injure a runkey. However, as timid creatures the tubers tend to flee, and proceed to be "bullied" into digging up tubers for them. This event, however, is actually quite rare, as tubers know better than to be even detected by runkeys.
In response to the tuber "invasion", the potatoes have also evolved multiple adaptations. They have evolve stronger roots and grow their potato tubers farther down, but in response to this the tubers just evolved even stronger limbs and claws, although some tubers couldn't adapt and turned to eating the local insects and leaves. The plants have also begun to spread even more northward, as none of the current species of monkey enjoy the cold. But, as the plains spread northward, the monkeys will follow, eventually.
As a side result of low nitrogen, potato plants in the plains have developed nitrogen fixing abilities though developing symbiotic root nodules. Although nitrogen fixing bacteria were present in the area, the decaying matter was not enough for them to do their work fully, and so the potatoes developed nitrogen fixing abilities themselves. However, as of right now pineapples have not developed this ability. As a result, areas where pineapples frequent are much more nitrogen deprived, and are much more dry or desert. Areas where potato plants frequent are much more fertile and sustain more life
