Trolls are huge omnivorous Apes that roam the most diverse of habitats. Many would say Troll's adaptability is second only to Humans, given that the great apes seem to always find a way to survive wherever they go. This has brought upon them a huge variety of forms and adaptations that are not completely discovered up to this day. The one presented here is a common Forest Troll.

The Forest Troll is a gargantuan Ape that, curiously, has mantained a tail. Walking on their knuckles, Gorillas propel themselves forward with two long and extremely muscular arms. The legs of the creature are half the lenght of the arms, but are nearly just as strong, and the animal can use all its four limbs to climb ledges and trees that can support its weight. The bulky male Trolls develop imposing cheek flaps to show their dominance, while the more slender female's cheeks are less prominent. In both sexes the nose is very developed, giving them an acute sense of smell comparable to a Bear's. Another peculiarity is their mouth, being very whide and possessing quite long canines for an ape.

Trools are infamous for their great strenght, able to lift and throw huge boulders and even rip trees from the ground. Nomadic to the core, they rarely if ever settle in the same area for more than a couple months. In that time the ape gorges itself on fruit, plants and animals as it pleases. Unless feeling hungry (which admittedly happens very often), Trolls are generally passive creatures, liking to also chill by sitting down under a cliff or a tree and laze about. However, when looking for meals, these primates become really aggressive, and will ferociously attack any animal that comes across them. Even more aggression is reserved to other Trolls, as males compete for dominance, and females defend their young (usually 1 or 2) with determined finality. Trolls haven't overrun this world mainly because of their females's fertility, which makes them bear no more than 3-4 clutches of young in their lifetime.

Trolls have a peculiar feature: they don't stand intense light. Not really nocturnal, they enjoy the shade of the deep forest, and can still be found wandering around at dusk and dawn. The main reason is that intense light, in particular sunlight, has an explosive reaction with Troll skin, making it turn...mineral. Indeed, if you leave a troll in the sun for a couple minutes, you'll have yourself quite a peculiar-shaped rock. Magic and nature, the strangest of lovers...

I imagine female trolls being more sociable and often congregate and migrate in groups. For a temporary period of times each year, the females are drawn to males with strong pheromones and males are promiscuous or polyamarous, amassing temporary harems. After breeding the females and males split.Β

I say this is a pretty articulate design for a semi-realistic troll; combining traits associated with real giant animals as well as the classic Scandinavian trolls, and what better reference than Giganotpithecus and the Proboscis Monkey.

I tend to use various influences for drawing my own troll designs, including ancient hominids and non-human primates, as well as proboscideans, hippopotami, pigs, and even basal dinosaurs; and of course the classic folklore trolls and giants as well as The Yeti and similar cryptids, the Giants in ASOIAF, and of course the trolls in Middle-Earth, particularly portrayed in the movies for their size and stature.

What do the other species of trolls look like?

The basic body stays the same, there'll be adaptations to different terrains. I'll see to show some in future updates.

King Louie would be proud of this one. Overall, I'm really liking this as an improvement over earlier designs; too many works portray trolls as being quasi-human and not really all that beast-like.

You could argue that trolls' exposed hides are already mineralized, and exposure to sunlight exaggerates this natural process to a dangerous degree.

I said I'd use Gigantopithecus for Trolls, and Gigantopithecus I used . Thanks dude, that's the way I wanted to take. Also one of the reasons I appreciated the Troll from Snow WHite and the Huntsman.

Would make sense, particularly older specimens, explains their unnaturally strong fists and heads XD

Indeed. I rather liked that troll design as well.

Precisely. XD
