Description
Centaurs (Chalicotherium hipposapiens) are close relatives to horses and rhinoceros. Despite the vaguely primate looks, they hold no relation to any simian and are hoofed animals. The gorilla-like build supports a strong body that is surprisingly able of speedy sprints, faster than any human can possibly run. This is mainly due to their powerful limbs, which present hoofed toes on the feet and long, sharp claws on the hands. The hands also present thick, callouse knuckles, allowing the animal to use them when sprinting and avoiding consuming their claws.Fully sentient, these relative of horses have developed a nomad lifestile and a organization that can very well be defined "tribe". Well-estabilished traditions are carried out orally from the elders, and passed on to the new generations. Remarkably, Centaurs are one of the few species of hoofed animals capable of manufacturing and efficently using tools. These go from simple things such as special peebles to crack big nuts to all-out battle weapons, from simple spears to thick shields. Now these mainly function for defense, as the Centaurs are exclusively herbivorous, and wild is full of hungry predators. While many carry spears, to actually use them they need to be stationary, as otherwise it would be very impractical for them to use such tools. As a result, if they are ever to charge an enemy, their spears will be tied to their shoulders pointing forward, freeing their limbs for charging. Due to this impracticability, many Centaurs devoted themselves to distance fighting, developing special bows and arrows that can be used by them as efficiently as humans use theirs.
Even more amazing is that Centaurs are capable of speech, and can understand and use any language they might learn. This has helped them greatly to develop ties with other tribes of creatures and expanding their culture. It is not unheard of for Centaurs to delve into the arcane power of magic, though not much information is known.
Wild and unpredictable, but also wise in the ways of nature, Centaurs have complex relationships with the rest of the world, being content mainly by being left in peace. Some though, have been defined as extremely "social" individuals, allegiedly sharing their knowledge with those they deemed worth. Given their quite long lifespan, they usually become mentors and teachers.

Yep, used Chalicotherium to make men-horses, as usual depiction of centaurs bores me.
Note: their shoulders aren't exactly what Chalicotherium's own were, being more simian and allowing more movement.

Very βPoul Andersonβ of you; he was going in this direction with his βLast Days of Farieβ saga, which he sadly died before finishing. βThe Mermanβs Childrenβ was basically taking the idea of βEvolutionary Creationismβ into the Animist AND Monotheistic realms, simultaneously, having soulless Fairy Folk be a mixture of sapient non-hominids, like these, and various species of near-human hominids, with whom humans could even breed with, but only baptism could grant them a soul and adopt them into the Tribe of Adam.

This is perhaps the best centaur body design, since it is biologically correct.

I was looking though Google for centaur and found a drawing of a goat with horns that make it look like a person. What is your thought on it?Β

Nice, I wished that Chalicotherium (my favorite extinct mammal) did survived and evolved into sapient species (like how you described your own Centaur).

Mongol chalicotheres? Very nice! I'm definitely liking your style of centaur over the classical depictions. I also like how their weapons and tools are simple - crude even - in design; with all their natural attributes they wouldn't need anything more advanced, not to mention it suits their nomadic lifestyle and lack of advanced metallurgy. Plus, no thumbs.

Thanks bro! This look came up in a conversation with a friend, and stayed with me. Exactly. Well, though in these sketch they show a small thumb, I though more about giving them a panda-like bump on the side of their hands to still allow for grasping appendages without falling into classic stereotypes, though I'm not really sure what route to take.

I like the idea of a panda-style pseudothumb; it's more exotic and plausible, given how horses do occasionally grow "claws" as a birth defect.
