Raising a child is never easy. There are the sleepless nights, the fussing fits, and the constant need for attention. If the poopy dippers aren’t enough to drive you crazy, then there’s always that part where they learn how to talk, and suddenly all you hear is ‘I want this’ and ‘I want that’. And if you can make it through that, eventually they start dating, and going to parties, and a whole new type of crazy sets in. I have five younger siblings, I am no strange to the pains of small children. But there are very few things harder than caring for a child who is in constant need of mechanical or medical assistance. Raising a child on life support is one the most trying things in the world. The bills for the hospital care are often through the roof, and often times aren’t covered on medical plans. Children sometimes can’t go home, or to school. They have problems playing with their piers, or even just going outside. To raise a child who is dependent on life support takes the care of doctors, family, friends, and most especially parents. All of the pain and struggle that accompanies it is one of the most pure acts of devotion that any parent to family can ever show. To make it through an experience such as this is an expression of absolute love.
