Description The second of the fighting ships deployed from the carrier ship. The frigate is the lightest and most maneuverable of the three classes, it's light weaponry and engine configuration reflect this idea. I started this ship like the cruiser, with custom shapes, finding a shape I liked, and expanding on it. This was my favorite of the three I did, I had a lot of fun working out the cockpit area and the details like RCS on the nose and small details like foil shielding and pipes.

This is beautiful work! I love the details and I would have thought it was a 3d render from the great perspective work and use of materials.

As for its classification, it definitely looks like a fighter or a fighter/bomber moreso than a frigate.
Here is a handy little ship classification guide I wrote for sci-fi artists that a lot of people seem to like and use. Hope it helps!
Sci Fi Ship Class GuideI.L. Jackson's Guide to Ship Classes
As anyone who has glanced at my gallery knows, I am a star ship fan(atic). I love designing my own starships and I know others do too. But, I've noticed that a lot of artists do not have a good idea of ship classes, what they do (traditionally) and their uses, particularly in a fleet. So, here is a guide to ship classes as they have been used traditionally and how they would likely be used in a sci-fi setting.
Capital Ships
This is the one a LOT of people get wrong. A Capital ship is an anchor ship for a fleet, meaning that fleets are built around the capabilities of the capital ships. Just about every other ship in the fleet has some job relating to the capital ships, whether it be defending or tending or supplying that ship.
Capital ships tend to be the largest warships in the fleet. Capital ships also virtually NEVER operate alone. A great example is (original universe and original series) U.S.S. Enterprise from Star Trek. It was a heavy cruiser.

May I ask is this a 2D art or 3D render? Because if this 2D art, it is amazing.

It's 2D! Though I often paint over a 3D base so I dont have to worry about perspective or inventing lighting. It started as some black and white shapes and I added the volume of some basic shapes like cylinders and boxes over it, you just keep working from larger volumes to progressively smaller ones until you need to add color to bring out your design. Pick up Scott Robertson's How to Draw, it has a great breakdown of all these skills!

ChaosInStillness is correct. When I saw the name, I was thinking it would be something along the lines of a Fleet Escort vessel, not a fighter craft. When I looked at the pic for a bit, the name "Sparrow" came to my head. But that's just me. I would definitely think about a name change. Otherwise, fantastic looking craft.

Sparrow would be a fitting name, thanks for looking!

This is a very interesting design from what I can see. Good lines and an interesting color palette. You might want to come up with a more creative name though. When I saw the title Frigate I was expecting a larger ship than a fighter. Frigates are a class of ship that generally are well armed (like guided-missile cruisers) and perform fleet or convey escort duties. Maybe think of a theme, like animals (Tiger, Raptor, etc...) or purpose for the name (Strike Fighter, Space Superiority, Bomber, etc...).

I think it looks like a bumblebee or something. The client called it a frigate, and I do agree that it looks a bit small to be called one, but maybe when more for the project is released it will have a better name. Anyways thanks for looking!

Person that is paying the bills calls it a Frigate then its a Frigate with a smile.  Neat looks ship not matter what you call it.

nice design, I can see a sense of realism in the components when i compare them to existing space hardware

Thanks! I referenced apollo engines and fighter jets a lot for this craft.
