Description
Helllllloooooooo there!I've been focused on getting my portfolio site up and communicating with potential employers for a while, so I've neglected to put some stuff up on DA. WELL NO LONGER.
This here (yall) is a set of two screenshots from within the Unreal Engine 3 level editor, the game engine used for Gears of War and Unreal Tournament 3. It is all my own artwork. Currently the scene is a work in progress, which is why some of the minor elements seem very simplistic and there isn't a specific light source for the lighting near the ground.
Right now I'm wrapped up in some other work, but I should be able to get back to finishing up this scene eventually since it is fairly small-scale. Let me know what you think!

Maria, the Robotrix, would feel quite at home here. Art Deco is my favortite style! Nice work!

Reminds me a bit of the World Serpent level in the game "Too human".
Well, except the lighting is better in this scene.

(old comment, I know, but...) Yeah, that was definitely one of my inspirations for this scene. Thanks!

Dude this is very impressive. But I have a question. Where did you get the Unreal Engine? Did it come with a game or did you buy it?

I'm just now getting around to responding to some comments I missed, so I'm not sure if you still are wondering about this, but in any case: I did use a copy of Unreal Tournament to create this scene, but since that time Epic has released their level editor (and more) for free to the public. You can find it here: UDK
And thank you.

Amazing! I love the environment design, something between sci-fi and steampunk. Light looks great too, even if it isn't finished

Noob question - how are these warm shadows made - post-processing?

Yep, it lets you adjust the brights, mids, and darks, kind of like the color balance thing in Photoshop.

i feel that the white area on the ceiling needs something though

Thanks man! I agree about the ceiling, that's one of the things I haven't gotten to yet and I'm not sure what I'll do with it. Maybe some simple pattern design.

firstly WOW amazing, love the Deco feel/styling
second, how about spaced out hanging lamps to take some detail into the ceiling instead of more pattern? I quite like the softness and simplicity of the ceiling space (sort of a 'breathing space' or something) in comparison to the complexity of the Deco walls and pillars, just a thought of course
But anyway, truly amazing, can't believe this is real-time!

Thanks Tobias! Yeah I agree, I would want it to be something understated so as not to be distracting. Hanging lights might work, I'll check it out.

Pleasure It's truly amazing! And yes, hanging lights occurred to me since they seem so quinisentialy deco for some reason. Actually I happened across these, might be useful if you have the chance to check them out:

That's incredible man. Design, colour scheme, lighting are all very elegant. I'm just learning the Unreal Editor myself right now so I can appreciate what went into this.

Thank you! It can be a frustrating engine to work with at times, but the payoff that comes when you can walk around your scene in realtime is awesome.

Thanks man, I had a lot of fun setting up the lighting. Glad to hear the colors are working out too, I actually struggled with that and was feeling iffy about the result.

this is so great. I'm loving your stuff cuz it's exactly what I want to get into -- game design. it really intrigues me for that reason, and makes me want to know more about you (haha, where you went to school etc)

Thank you! Hehe, well, my career path so far has been kind of the hard way around and I wouldn't recommend it. If I could do it over I'd probably have gotten a degree in Industrial Design, or Architecture, or a general art degree, while practicing and studying game art in my spare time. The game industry is still changing so rapidly that trying to study it formally is problematic -- there is a good chance that courses will teach you outdated technology and methods. From what I can tell, it seems like a safer bet to be self-taught through participating in game art online communities like Polycount and Game Artisans .
It's worth noting that game art and game design are quite different subjects. If you do mean you want to work in game design rather than game art, unfortunately I don't have much insight into that career field other than to suggest working on game mods, custom levels, and simple but fun flash games. The important thing for that field is to demonstrate your understanding of what makes games fun, and your creativity in coming up with new or adjusted gameplay systems. Although I do have a passion for game design, right now I'm focused on game art as a career.

thanks so much for all that info! I actually talked about this whole subject with my brother-in-law for a long time last night, he's a recent graduate from SVA for motion graphics. well what I'm thinking is just going with a computer art major rather than taking a game art course or something. that way I can try for a job with game art or I'll still have many doors open to me in other areas. did you go to school for game art, or what exactly did you do?

Thanks Jenbu! I originally started out going for a generic sci-fi look and it just kind of naturally swerved in an art deco direction, so I decided to embrace it. Glad it manages to capture that vibe.
