Description After watching a Gnomon Workshop lecture on the custom brushes, I spent the afternoon working on some of my own in CS3, and then I started messing around with using them and came up with this. Mastering the custom brush system seems it'll add a lot of nice detail to my work without much effort, as well as help me work more quickly overall. Been a while since I made a purely abstract picture, so that was fun too. What do you think of the composition? Does it feel balanced? Dynamic?

I think it's fascinating. I love the graceful flow and the intricate interweaving of the shapes.. great stuff Captain

Thanks Dave! I just noticed that if you look at your icon a certain way, it appears to be a bird with a tiny beak and giant forehead!

It's a profile of a bird - very Juno style. The beak is on the left and the eye is on the right, next to the side end of the square.

That looks great, yes, it appears to be dynamic and balanced. Abstract art is awesome, I've always enjoyed it.

Thanks man. I didn't really have much of an appreciation for abstract work until my time as an architecture student. It's very helpful for learning about composition and design. I still don't spend much time browsing around for it, though; maybe I should start doing that.

I think it's great. I'm not big on abstract art in general, but I like it anyway. I think it looks like a bunch of shiny somethings.

I don't have much critique to give, but happy CS3ing. Isn't it awesome?

(Oh, and I'm glad you're back).

First you make a greyscale image that you want to use for your brush. Once you've made your custom brush stroke image, make a selection box around it and choose Edit > Define Brush Preset. Then when you open the brush editor (F5) your custom brush shape is available in the Brush Tip Shape list. Custom brushes have lots of options and configurations, so I recommend looking up some online tutorials or buying a set of video lectures. The one I watched today was "From Speedpainting to Concept Art" by Gnomon Workshop and I highly recommend it.
