Description
Since I'm still in my humanized Lion Guard characters phase, I figured it would be fun to humanize Kion and Rani on their coronation/wedding that takes place in the final episode. I literally traced their original lion faces and made a few tweaks to make them more human-like, and I came up with the rest on my own (after doing some research about Indian ceremonial clothing and jewelry, since the Tree of Life seems to be in India). Kion has a more traditional European king outfit, but I added a few Indian elements too. I kinda wish I tried something African-inspired on him, that probably would've been better. I think I unintentionally made his wardrobe look a little too similar to Prince Charming from Cinderella. I was gonna go for a different color like black or golden yellow for his suit, but black made him look like King Agnarr from Frozen and gold just did not look good at all (and neither did maroon/red, which I also tried). Let's be honest, white and red suit him anyway. The white fits best for the whole peaceful aesthetic of the Tree of Life. I even added a little medal with the Lion Guard emblem in honor of his years of service to the Pridelands. I honestly liked the way he looked better before I added his king outfit and crown though; a suit just isn't something I feel like Kion would wear very often because he's always active and on the move defending animals. But I think I got his face perfect for my liking (the fact that I traced a screenshot of his face probably helped a lot).
Anyway, all that said about Kion, I have to say I really love the way Rani turned out. I was intimidated by how extremely intricate and beautiful Indian designs are and knew I had to either go all in and try to do it justice or not do it at all. So I took the challenge, and I think it definitely paid off, giving her a very queenly elegance. The jewelry was also really hard and time-consuming, but the hardest part was getting her hair right. Her hair was a lot harder than Kion's, because Kion has that cool little quiff of hair on his head that translates nicely to human form, while Rani doesn't. I've seen humanizations of Rani with a braid or something similar, which I really liked the look of, but I felt like she would look most like lion Rani with her hair up. So after researching Indian hairstyles, I found one I thought would suit her, and it took forever to draw it accurately, but I think it looks pretty good on her. I had to scale her eyes waaay down, because as most people have noticed, Rani has extremely large eyes, but they still look pretty big on her despite my efforts to shrink them. Oh well, I think she still looks fine.
I might do a few more humanizations before I move on, like maybe Janja and Jasiri, or even the royal family (Simba, Nala, Kiara, and Kion). Several people have requested them, and I think it would be fun. However, I want to stick more to drawing the Lion Guard as their animal selves, because that's what makes them such fun, unique characters. Anyway, I think Kion and Rani make an adorable couple (though drawing this picture made me realize how unusually young they are to be married, much less ruling a kingdom), and I really hope we'll get to see more of them in the future whenever Disney decides to continue expanding the world of The Lion King.
