Description

While the Cuxhaven class was still the primary frigate in the fleet and also most produced class in German navy, command decided that new class is to supplement and eventually replace the Cuxhaven. Of course replacement would be over time as Germany do not wish to lose these frigates as they are backbone of the fleet. Among the several designs Neuschwanstein was chosen as sucessor to Cuxhaven.

Command wanted ship that is more resilient and capable of carrying more weapons then Cuxhaven, while Cuxhaven did prove itself, it did had several problems, which were shown during war with Empire of China, one of problems was that its shield generators were not adequate and each time ship firing its weapons it was ten to fiften percent weaker (during duration of firing), it is also that shield system didn't had big capacity, also more important while Cuxhaven was well armored that armor was not enough, once ship lose its shields, it was quite easy to penetrate even well armored parts of the ship, this leads to over a half dozen ships been lost. There were more problems, or bugs with sensor equipment and while all this problems (with exception of armor) were fixed, it was clear that class need heavy refit.

In seven years after the war, almost all of Cuxhavens received these upgrades, new shield system with larger capacity, new sensor array, enhanced armor, although due design it was not possible to enhance interior much as it was planned. Command then decide that while Cuxhaven will remain in service, it will no longer be under production and new frigate will be cleared for production, it is not surprised that design that win as sucessor to Cuxhaven, the Neuschwanstein was ordered for production so quickly, first two ships, Neuschwanstein istelf and Hohenzollern had extensive trials in which they were proven far superior to Cuxhaven in almost all areas, from weaponry (despite new frigate using existing weapons that were also on Cuxhaven but more of them), new armor, new shields, new sensors and new engines. While Cuxhaven was built as multi-purpose frigate, Neuschwanstein on the other hand was built with different approach. It is also multi-purpose ship, its modular design allows it quick changes to equipment but since there is hundreds and hundreds of Cuxhavens in fleet and since they are still the main frigate, this new frigate was more built for speed in mind. It was way superior then Cuxhaven in speed and command decided to use its incredible speed and manuverability for hit and run attacks, ambushes, while still capable to go toe vs toe in fleet combats due been resilient and well protected.

In two years of production 32 ships of Neuschwanstein class were built and are in service, with over two to three hundred to be built in next five to ten years.

Ship carry's impressive arsenal for its size. It main weapons are nine 270mm High phased beam laser cannons which were mounted in three triple turrets, single 190mm High phased beam cannon located on the bow, sixteen anti-ship missile launchers which can also carry anti-ship torpedoes due launchers been modular, these launchers were located on the top in VLS configuration. There is also anti-fighter/missile/torpedo missiles in twenty four side launchers, four to six heavy anti-ship antimatter torpedoes which while been slower are quite devastating, especially against unshielded targets. Ship also carry thirty single 40mm Pulse laser AA rapid firing cannons for short range defense. While it have strong shield system and quite resilient armor, it also have passive defenses, these is the ECM which is designed to protect ship from enemy jamming, hacking but also can jam enemy targeting as well its missiles and torpedoes, making lock on Neuschwanstein much harder.  But maybe the biggest offensive and defensive weapon is its speed which alows it not only to charge enemy and dodging easier but also to quickly retreat if needed. Neuschwanstein usually do not carry any fighters or bombers on board as its hangar bay is small, however it still can carry up to twelve fighters (one squadron) if necessary and four shuttles, usually there is six to eight shuttles on board. It depends on mission and need.

Neuschwanstein is slightly larger then previous Cuxhaven class, it is 335m in length and have crew of 250. Class is named after German castles and palaces on Earth.
