Description

Germanian Bauer class Light Cruiser is the last of the Light cruiser type ships designed for German navy. It was designed together with Weinheim class Destroyer and as such share many parts from it. This was done to cut the costs in ship production and maintenance and to increase production capabilities. As a light cruiser Bauer is designed to shield larger ships from enemy fire, however also to act in smaller wolfpacks and engaging enemy sides. In fleet combat it is usually position near heavy cruisers and battleships.

First Bauer class ship, GNS Alfred Bauer was launched one year after first Weinheim class Destroyer was. It was named after Alfred Bauer, man responsible for first real Ion engine and also man responsible for Warp drive theory which several of his students finished. Bauer class been a light cruiser is slightly larger then destroyer. It has stronger armor and shielding as well advanced ECM systems on board.

It is armed with same caliber as Weinheim class, 270mm Phased laser beam cannons. Bauer carry nine of them in four turrets, three of turrets are designed for the class, two located in front of the bridge and one of lower side of ship, while forth turret is triple turret same one used at Weinheim class. Reason for adding triple canon turret was not really known, but it is believed that far more turrets were build then Weinheim class destroyers so spare turrets were used on Light cruiser. Bauer carry standard destroyer complement of missile and torpedo launchers (24x missile launchers, 12x torpedo launchers) but it also carry 40 VLS launchers for newest anti-ship/missle/fighter missiles. For short range it have the same defenses as Weinheim, single 40mm Pulse Laser AA rapid firing cannons and it carry 34 of them.

Bauer usually carry 12x Medium sized shuttles, 8x smaller shuttles and 12x fighters.

Class is 502m long, it have crew of 760.

Despite been only a light cruiser it was still big ship, its smaller then then Kaiser Wilhelm II class Heavy cruiser which is 570m in length. Bauer is quite strong ship and like destroyers it to operates in wolfpacks. This wolfpacks proved quite deadly. During border skirmish with Chinese Empire, this ships destroyed dozens of Chinese cruisers which were much larger without losing single member of their own, having few disabled. German ships were generally superior to those of Chinese and Russian navies, and German crews far more trained and had more experience.

With new Odin class combat cruiser entering service, Bauer is no longer primary ship but it still serve its roles as defensive ship. Total of 312 ships were constructed within 15 years. Class is no longer in production and each ship is designed to remain in service for at least forty years so this class will stay around for at least next fifty to seventy years. Unlike Berlin class which will remain in production (although together with Bauser was to stop in favour of Odin class), which will serve together with Odin class, Bauer class was not chosen for continuation of production.

LK means Leichter Kreuzer or light cruiser.

Bauer class was constructed on five Shipyards across the German territory. In multiple Batches, Batches were symbolical as very few minor changes or none were actually added. Some ships did received special equipment, different armament but no more then few.

LK-447 Alfred Bauer - First of Bauer class Light cruisers. It served as prototype and later test bed for new technologies.

LK-451 Albert Einstein - Saw heavy combat against Chinese forces, destroying two heavy cruisers and four destroyers at the battle of Xu'an.

LK-477 Anne Frank - One of Cruisers that was recently equipped with science equipment and serve as explorer, but still carry most of her armaments.

LK-487 Thomas Mann - Heavily damaged during war with Chinese but famous for even badly damaged it destroyed Chinese Heavy cruiser and saved over two hundred German soldiers from Chinese prison planet.

LK-490 Robert Koch - First ship equipped with brand new generation of Warp drive in German navy.
