History:

Niagara class was comissioned in same time as her cousin Ambassador (from which she takes similar hull shape and warp nacelles). While Starfleet prefers to have two warp nacelles on its ships, ships with one, three or four were not unusual. Nigara have strong warp field thanks to its three warp nacelles and was very fast for its time. Ship was considered to be medium range explorer with enough weaponary and defenses to protect itself if need.

Class although not originally designed for combat saw a lot of it. First during Cardassian-Federation war, then against Borg (twice) and finally short war with Klingons and Dominion war and in small numbers in secondary roles in Odonan war. Class was built from 2349 to 2365, one hundred and seventy were built in that time before class was discontinued for new and better designs.

It performed very well during Fed-Card war surivivng the war without any of its members lost. First loss came in 2367 when USS Princenton was lost in battle of Wolf 359 against Borg, one ship was later dissapeard near edge of Federation space (2370), USS Trenton which expirienced massive failure after been struck by very powerful and sudden Ion storm, crash landed on Eberny III, over half of crew survived and they are been rescued by Starfleet two weeks later. USS San Martin faced the Borg in 2373 in sector 001 battle, unlike Princenton, San Martin survived but was so damaged that ship was written off, although some of its parts were later used to repair two other damaged Niagaras during Dominion war. Dominion war saw many members of this class destroyed. Ninty two ships survived and were heavily modified (new warp core, new shields, weaons). Several participate in war against Odonans and all survived it.

Class remain in service as explorer ship (at least few), but many were stationed in inner parts of Federation protecting Federation core worlds and some other like Trill, Bajor...
