History:
During later part of 2360's Starfleet start a new Deep space exploration project. This project would spam several classes like Sovereign, Jupiter and Excalibur. Excalibur was the largest of them and largest Starfleet class to be built at that time.
While Excalibur and Sovereign share many components, Sovereign was smaller and more compact comparing to massive and bulky Excalibur. But Starfleet thanks to admiral Murdock pushed to project. By the mid of 2373 USS Excalibur would be launched. At that date it was largest ship ever built by Starfleet and presented technological marvel. However as much as it was impressive in size it was nighmare for large engineering team. Ship was plagued by problems, it was capable of moving on sub speeds but because her Warp drive was also new it wasn't really capable of reach high speed due multiple issues with the warp core. In same year the old Ambassador class USS Excalibur was decommissioned, the old Excalibur would spend some time at Vulcan Eridani yards and ironically it will participate in First battle of Vulcanis only one year later. Admiral Solak in need of all ships will order old Excalibur to be recommissioned once again and while she would participate and fight heroically she would be destroyed during later part of the battle.
In the mean tiime engineering team would continue fighting bugs and all other kind of problems that plagued new Excalibur. She won't be ready till the time of 3d battle of Vulcanis where she would lead small battlegroup under admiral Carter to assist Solak defending the Vulcan. Although Starfleet didn't want her to be seen by Dominion there was little choice, she was big, and well armed and Vulcan needed reinforcements.
She and her battlegroup would attack Dominion forces from flank. Massive ship would bring her impressive arsenal on Dominion. Solak seen the massive ship and other Starfleet ships, ordered all of his ships to turn and ruch straight into Dominion, faced from two side, remaining Dominion forces would withdraw.
While Excalibur still had some issues she would perform quite well during combat but Starfleet won't continue production of new Excalibur class ships. Starfleet decide that now in time of war, spending resources on such big ship would be waste and instead will heavily focus on smaller ships to boost the numbers. Excalibur would remain in Sol system and by 2375 she would be part of 4th fleet. When Breen launched their surprise attack on Earth, Excalibur and 4th fleet would respond and decimate most of attacking fleet, despite this small number of ships would still be able to bombard Starfleet HQ and some close by area. But only handful of Breen ships would survive and escape.
after the war, Starfleet start to rebuild, for next ten years Starfleet will have war time production but projects that were previously cancelled, put on hold or slowed will now slowly be returned. Despite the fact that Starfleet already had several big classes, Excalibur would continue with production. Her actions during the war thanks to Admiral Carter, show that she could be used as command ship for battlegroup or entire fleet. Although some officers like Admiral's Sitak, Ross and Mitchell believed that single large ship used as command ship may be primary target for enemy forces, as such, multiple defense wings were placed to protect command ships from attacks. It could be said that Starfleet re-invented military tactics completley after the war, all in order to be more efficient. Excalibur class would continue with construction and total of twenty two shisp would be built, much more then it was originally planned as during initial plans only six to eight were planned. Some Excaliburs would be used as command ships in more hostile sectors, some will used in protection of Earth, Vulcan and Andoria and some will be used in role they were originally designed, Deep space exploration ships, one ship USS Camelot will be equipped with slipstream technology and would be send to Delta quadrant in 2394. Another Excalibur, USS Guinevere will receive first Starfleet transwarp engine which was re-engineered from Borg thanks to the 7 of 9. Ship will also be send to Delta quadrant. Ironically she would be first Excalibur to be send to Delta quadrant, with second Delta battlegroup, and will be followed by Camelot in Fourth battlegrup. Guineverre will also see more combat then her sister, fighting not only Borg but some other highly territorial and aggressive species.
Class itself was considered by some as a massive luxury liner although this wasn't true. Her interior was designed not to look militaristic, and was suited for diplomatic meetings, first contacts and so on. As an explorer she carried large number of science and exploration equipment, have extensive science laboratories, large hydrophonics and even two large industrial replicators. This all allow Excalibur to be self-sufficient ship. She was designed to go on five year missions in deep space without neededing to be refueled and with replicators it could create any part it need for repairs or even upgrades.
But she wasn't only exploration ship, she was also combat ship in disguise. Her offensive and defensive capabilities were impressive. USS Excalibur may be the first of her class and only of her class for almost seven years but this also help Starfleet to mold the ship and improve it over the years and when production finally started in 2379, new Excaliburs would be fitted with most advanced technologies that Starfleet had, even some that Starfleet received and re-engineered from Voyager.
Her armament consist of twelve Type XII phaser arrays, although some members, especially those that go deep space have up to egitheen Type XII phaser arrays. These phaser arrays like those on Intrepid can fire all in same time allowing to fire in all directions in same time. Excalibur class originally carry one rapid firing Quantum torpedo turret, later this was increased to two. Total of two hundred (up to four hundred) quantum torpedoes would be on board. There is also five Type IV burst fire photon torpedo tubes with total of five hundred photon torpedoes. During the 2380's, class also received around hundred Hellfire torpedoes. Only few ships of the class would carry Transphasic torpedoes.
Defenses were also quite powerful and had the strongest shield system in the fleet. While Pathfinder class was considered as one of strongest ships and most versatile of the larger ships in fleet, her shields were slightly less powerful comparing to Excalibur, while most Excalibur's stationed in Federation space have same capacity as Pathfinder class shields have, those that were send outside Federation have their shields boosted even more. Standard Excalibur cpacity was 6,590,000 TerraJoules, the same capacity that Pathfinder have, hower in case of ships send outside , this would be increased to 8,120,000 TerraJoules. While this data wasn't that much important as any of the Relentless or Pathfinders could easly get their capacity on same level, it was worth to mention. Pathfinder's were powerful and had advantage thanks to MVAM system (at least first 4 ships) but while they were said to be strongest class by their designer, Commodore Arnheim, they are more or less equal to Excalibur.
Excalibur like Pathfinder, Jupiter and Relentless was built in smaller numbers, and this was logical. They are big, expensive ships, loss of such larger ship would cost a lot, especially in moral, because of that Starfleet invested heavily to make sure this ships can survive no matter what. Production stopped after twenty two ships.
