History:

Work on Nebula successor started as early as 2382. Class which to supplement and slowly replace Nebula class as multi-purpose exploration cruiser. In 2390, work on lead ship USS Sutherland would start at San Francisco Yards. Ship would be launched two years later and by 2394 it will finally enter service. Class came with all standard comfort of Starfleet ship. It was designed for long range exploration, science and survey missions as well first contact events.

As an explorer, it have most advanced science labs on board and larger hangar bay for more shuttles and support vehicles. Like older Nebula, it has mission pod, which can be changed depending on what type of mission is needed. Most standard one is combat pod which have four torpedo tubes and one phaser array, there is medical pod, transport pod, colony pod, sensor pod and shield emitter pod.

Sutherland's tactical capabilities were quite advanced and well suited for defending itself if needed. Ships of this class usually carry ten type 12 phaser arrays and four torpedo tubes but they could be equipped with additional four torpedo tubes if necessary. It'shields were also one of most advanced in use.

Sutherland is also one of fastest class in service altough with advent of transwarp and slipstream standard wrap speed become slowly obsolete, however since Sutherland class was not equipped with slipstream or transwarp it still utilize good old warp core and this is nothing surprising taking that ninty nine percent of fleet still operate standard warp cores. While built for exploration and science missions, Sutherland is quite capable combat ship, even more then what was Nebula class. It was designed to take punch but also to deliver heavy hit back. By the 2401 class was still supplement to the Nebula class which remains in service, however as the years moves, more and more of this ships enter service and slowly replace Nebulas as mainline explorers, although that doesn't mean Nebula class would be retired anytime soon, as Nebula was to remain in service at least till 2430s.
