History:

With Dominion war over, Starfleet started to rebuild its fleet. While many in command believed that age of exploration is coming again and that Starfleet needed to focus as such, there were again many who think different. New generation of starships that were designed for both combat and exploration were already underway and Obena was among the designs. Excelsior class ships and their upgraded Enterprise subtypes were most common ship in fleet during Dominion war, and together with equally common Miranda class served on all fronts, suffering heavy losses. With so many ships destroyed and many old ships decommission, Starfleet had a huge gap that needed to be filled, and this gap was particuallary big in exploration part. Two designs were approved as direct replacement for Excelsiors (despite the fact that few dozen Excelsiors and Enterprise subtypes will remain in service till 2411). First of those was direct upgrade of Excelsiors, called Excelsior III class. It was slightly larger then originals, retaining the design but more on 24th look. These EIII as were called were to be built on mass to boolster the number of fleet, however once Inquiry class enter service, production of EIII would stop, nevertheless little over hundred of these EIII would be built by that time.

Second of two designs and larger one was Obena class. Obena retained that classical design of Excelsior but this was only cosmetical. She was 800 meters in length, bulkier then Excelsior which was some 467 in length and more sleeker. Obena in size was larger even the Sovereign class but was not powerful as Sovereign. It was designed as long range exploration ship, and carried enough firepower to defend herself in needed.

Obena uses lots of Sovereign class systems, the same warp core, similar nacelles, strong and resilient shields, even her bridge module was similar to that of Sovereign. While Starfleet kept its Sovereign fleet inside the Federation space, Obena was to go outside on exploration missions. Like Sovereign it has large and luxurious conference rooms, VIP quaters and everything that was needed for first contact missions.

Despite been larger then Sovereign, Obena was equally manuverable.

During combat situation, Obena would serve as command ship for smaller task forces, or secondary flagship if there is one of other more specified for the role.

While class was quite success she like Excelsior III was removed from production rooster once Inquiry class enter service. However the reason is also that Starfleet still produced Sovereign's, and there was a lot of new ships already in production, like Century, Legacy, Vesta and so on. Nevertheless 60 of Obena class would be built before the class was cancelled and these will serve together with EIII well into 25th century.
