While the character's name is from the original Jem this design completely belongs to me.
I'm hoping to resume commissions tomorrow.
EDIT: Wow this character is truly unlucky, she didn't even get 10 faves. From now on Magazine covers that aren't commissioned will go to the scraps so if you're interested in those set a watch to the scraps section too so you'll be notified.

Yes I am, yes I get where you're coming from but please understand, that's why I made her about the same age as Jerrica. I don't want to add characters to the story, and the only way to tell that part of the business/corporate side, was to use a character that was made exactly as a "moral of the story" type of thing. Believe me, I would have gone 80s and have her be a survivor (might do that if I ever finish it but it's like a 10% chance of doing it like that) We've seen a lot of stars survive this and become role models, but what about those that have died in this business for the "corporate overlords" Having Laura die like I'm planning it, not only becomes a mirror of Jerrica but Jerrica's own mother. How much are you willing to give for this career. Keep in mind, in the show Jerrica overworks herself and it's rarely brought up.
I'm not a good writer (sadly) but there are so many things that I want to write in this story, based on what was written already by the creators but removing the silliness of the show and the 80s hopefulness. Doesn't mean I want to write a "dark and gritty" story, no, I want to write what Jem and the Holograms were at its core, inspiration. They always tried to make people feel better and be better and I want to keep that in my version.
That being said, I completely respect your comment and who knows, you may be right. Won't know myself for sure until I'm done writing it.

I would love to give you an estimate but I don't even know if it'll be finished. I was counting on a writer I know, that also loves Jem and the Holograms, to help me out but she's too busy and I don't have enough money to hire someone. I can't even make money off of this since Hasbro is very tight with their licenses, especially this one after the messy situation it was in (prior to the movie).

If you are not writing right now then allow me to do one suggestion. If you are going to kill her please don't let it be a drug related death it will make it look like she didn't learn anything. Yes the movie has messed up everything. I didn't see it but I heard enough about it. How long have you waited on the writer friend of yours?

Long enough where I know I won't get her support on this. And don't worry, it will say drugs but it won't be drugs. I have a whole arc for her which will introduce other characters like Video and Lin-Z.
I'm pretty sure I wrote it somewhere that I want Lin-Z to be youtuber~ish? As in "an independent but still a journalist" that got fed up with how mass media handles things (with a focus on sensationalism)
I didn't bother watching the movie, I knew it would suck. I haven't even checked the new comics, I don't like the changes to the characters (which is why I said I completely understand your concern with Laura)
I know a lot of people like them, even my friend who recommended them to me at one point, but I also admit it's not for me, it's one of those cases where I'll have to do what I want to see even if I'm the only one that likes it.
But that's also what's holding me back, I want to do it but as best as I can, and currently I can't give it my best. It might be for the best at least for now, there are 4 things I'm having trouble with.
1. Rio / Riot
2. Techrat
3. Synergy X.X
4. Kimber + Stormer
There are probably more but those 4 are very important in different plots that affect the story, especially the ending.

Techrat
I have multiple ideas for it including the version I already illustrated.
1. Techrat retains a closer design to that of the show
2. Techrat is not a person but a group of hackers
The way I see it, the biggest threat to Jem's identity would most likely come from hackers IMO.
There are hologram concerts already so if we see one we wouldn't question the tech all that much.
But people in tech may find it a bit too much for what's currently capable/available and would start digging.
And that's just part of it, I'm still not sure what I want the character to be, I just know I don't want him to be a tool.
Whatever he or they do, would be of their own making, not Lex Lu... I mean Eric Raymond.

Have you seen Macross Plus? Sharon Apple is how I always wanted Synergy and Jem to be like.
The concerts, I want them to be like those instead of the (mostly) dumb videos they had on the show.
They worked fine then I guess, I never liked them tbh. Felt stupid to have a music video based on
whatever weird situation they were in. I want the drama side (rather call it the character development side)
separate from the spectacle.
Just like their rivalry with the Misfits I want it to be more logical. Not continues murder attempts that go
unpunished. If Rihanna tried to run Katy Perry over with a truck or something... Again, 80s it was kind of
OK to be low key violent.

Concept really, just the concert presentation and the hacking thing 'cause it makes too much sense.
The other thing with it being a puppet and the AI getting all Lore... (STNG reference) I danced around
with the idea, but ended up discarding it. My origin of Synergy is for me to know and for it to not
matter at all in the story.

Oh this is truly sad. It isn't often that you associate a death with the Jem cartoon. At least not "current" ones. Sure we hear of past deaths, Emmet Benton & Jacqui Benton but even in the most dire episodes, nobody was ever killed off in the series. Aside from her weakness in giving in to peer pressure & doing drugs, Laura Hallaway was perhaps the most human & real out of the whole cast of characters. Her struggles were exactly that of many teens during the 80s, especially the homeless ones who would not perhaps have been lucky enough to even be familiar with the cartoon. But then...not much has changed these days if the statistics of teenage suicide is any indicator. The Jem cartoon & story line is still very much relevant today. "Look Inside Yourself" is a very poignant song!

I'm only writing a very fast plot line here as I'm no writer but if by some miracle they (Hasbro or whomever has the rights now) felt like I'm doing the plot line that should be done these days, I really want more time developing Laura so her death does mean something. Glad you had a look, being a straight male that holds interest in Jem is weird... even to me, but I always liked female writing more than FULL ACTION MAN STUFF, GO JOE!

I can relate to you on that. Jem bewitched me with her bubblegum pop tunes and I LOVED the lyric of the Misfits and then the mre realistic Stingers. I also found this was the ONLY cartoon that had a realistic approach and that's what made a fan out of me.

I like your Cover but can I sajust something? If Laura was a big star and she died the cover headlines would all be about her. Such as "What was fould In her room" "Were Drugs involevd?" I love your Jem stuff.

Agreed and up to a point they are. I mean it's a magazine that came some time after the fact, not a newspaper. So they had time to go all over the place and get everyone that was in one way or the other involved like her previous manager, the studio owner, co workers, other artists that knew her etc. I cannot make it any better than it is, at least not yet. I haven't work at a publishing agency so I lack that touch they have to sell magazines with just letters on the cover. I'm not saying you are wrong, just that my skill isn't that good yet.
The way I do this kind of stuff, especially Ultimate Jem is with me as a target audience. What kind of headlines would make me buy that magazine. Well getting Eric Raymond statement, especially as a magazine exclusive is one way. When an important figure dies I actually want to know what happened, I mean what could have driven the artist in question to commit suicide in this case. So with that in mind there's the "Fingers pointed, career on the line" headline. I also like some sort of closure or reassurance that such a thing shouldn't have happened so that's why the artists unite headline is there.

I don't expect everyone to like everything. I mean I think I have like 900 watchers and none of my pics have 900 faves. Closest is 449 and that's on a naked fanart piece so doesn't really count. But I actually thought this drawing turned out pretty good. I worked extra hard on that damned hair and was considering doing the same in future arts but apparently I should keep doing what I've been doing. I seriously didn't expect this image to do as poorly as my male deviations (those I know won't do well as I don't fave many male images either)

The question was more about if I should bother to post them than me doing them or not. The other two covers I had planned were the Cool Trash cover for the Misfits shoot and Ramblin Rock with a Fire and Ice cover. I will do them but they will probably go straight to the scraps if they make it to DA at all.
