We can partially thank the padding for that.
Actually, considering Snake's personality... He'd rarely take the time to play his gender up. Aside from a few occasional jokes throughout MGS1 and 2, he cares more about the mission than about fulfilling any certain stereotypes. I always figured that if there WERE gender swaps of MGS, Solid would change the least amongst them all.

Knowing him, why do I get the feeling that, if changed, he'd only consider his female anatomy as merely another place to conceal an extra ammo clip?
