Whee...I finally finished it!
Here is my half of an art trade with , wherein she wished for a Zelgadis in modern clothes, in an autumn setting. ^_^ I have always thought ponds and lakes to be very relaxing and a good place to think, and I have a feeling that a modern Zel would frequent the local parks or ponds for some quality alone time.
Leaf boats are cathartic, I tell you.
This picture was a lot of fun to do, not only because I got to paint my favorite Slayers character, but I also got the chance to use a lot of different tools and brushes. And may I say...the Seurat brush works wonders for background trees. *grin*
Sorry it took me so long, Eugene, I hope you like it! Thank you SO MUCH again for my sword practicing Zel picture! ^_^

Heehee, those shoes actually belong to a friend of mine. He said I could borrow them, and I actually held one in my hand as I sketched them onto Zel's feet. XD

Althought when I say Zel and melancholy in the same sentence, knowing one of Zel's voice actors... I think of Kyon from The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. Meh, I really need to stop ranting now XD

Heehee, well "melancholy" and "Zelgadis" are practically synonymous, so it's no surprise. For me, Hikaru Midorikawa will always be Zelgadis...he's hilarious, especially when he gets pissed. XD I even went so far as to have my home-made Zel plushie's belly signed by Midorikawa-sama. *fangirls up and down the place*
Heh, I'm sure he'd show you; he seems to be a chimera of many talents, that's for sure.

Hooray! He's now Zel-sensei in the class of Leaf Boats 101. If I were ever in a class where Zel was the teacher, I'd probably get detentions every day for trying to glomp him. But I'd never be able to serve those detentions because I'd be in the hospital from glomping him.

First time I ever saw Zelgadis was during the opening of Slayers. And then, I think somewhere where him, and Lina, Gourry, Amelia, and Silphia all were together on their way to find the lab of that Rezzo copy. Anyways, I'm hooked. ^_^ Zelly is so very cool.

Maybe two years too late for comments, but...
First thought on seeing this was "Hm, Nightcrawler's looking a little craggy around the eyes... Zel!" Very nicely done, and kind of poignant- the thought that comes to mind is that this isn't just a modern variant of Zel, but a Zel that was never able to reverse his transformation, a Zel that is doomed to spend eternity... outliving his friends.

Even though he's a chimera, I'd like to think that his human third would keep him from having to outlive his friends and loved ones...plus most of the rest of them are magic-users, and I'd like to think that because of that their lives are somewhat extended too. ^^ Ah, wishful thinking.
Still...I'm still very taken with your interpretation...I do think it a very real possibility in that fanverse, as sad as it would be.

*bows* Indeed, Zel is a very introspective individual; he needs solitude as much as he needs people around to pull him out of his funks. ^_~ Given his character, I'm under the impression that he was a private person, even before his transformation...so I found this particular setting appropriate for our contemplative chimera.

OMG... When I saw the preview of this, I thought for a second it was a real picture. O.o; the background is bloody AMAZING!
I love Zelgadis' expression. It's... not quite serene, but very contemplative. As if he's saying goodbye to someone... which is often the reason for setting sail, is it not?

I'm glad you kept it this size because it's gorgeous. I love all the streaks and the contrast of textures (from the soft trees and the feel of the lake to the scratches of him, especially the hair, and the grass.) beautoful mix of colors and just an awesome looking piece!
